REPORT

Well, where do I start? What night of action! Lets just go from the top to the bottom of the scedule.

It was an excellent opening match of the evening, as the Masons Arms 'B' took on Middle Barton SSC 'B' in the Supplementary Cup Final. After three closely contested legs, with just a few dolls between the teams, the Masons held a narrow 4-2 lead. They then set in the forth leg, and posted a imposing total of 16 dolls. However, the Middle Barton side produced some great throwing to successfully chase this total down to level the match and send it to a deciding leg, which is exactly what the match deserved. The Masons set again in this last leg and quickly shrugged off the disappointment of losing the previous leg, posting a superb total of 18 dolls. Unfortunately for Middle Barton, this proved too big a total to chase as they fell short in their efforts. So, it was the Masons Arms 'B' who secured the victory, and with it completed a league & cup double this season. The two teams were excellent on the night and congratulations go both teams, and it showed the strength in depth of our league after such good performances from sides from the lower sections. It was a great start to the night.

The next match was the Four-a-Side Final, which was betwwen teams from the Black Prince 'A' and the Three Pigeons. On paper, this looked like it was going to be a closely fought contest, but that's not really how it panned out, with the Pigeons four winning 2-0. The Prince set in the opening leg, posting an average total of 12 dolls. The Pigeons successfully chased down with 13 dolls, with anchorman Neil Lyon hit a 4 to win in what was Neil's first action of the evening (his name might be mentioned again in this report!). The Prince set again in the second leg, but could only put up a total of 9 dolls, which never looked to be enough. Sure enough, the Pigeons eased past this and secured their first trophy since coming into the league. Well done to Roger, Ray, Wayne & Neil on claiming this trophy.

Next up was the Triples Final, which was a rematch between teams from the Black Prince 'A' and the Three Pigeons. The Prince team were looking to hit back after their defeat in the Fours Final, and they started strongly by setting and winning the opening leg. However, the Pigeons hit back in the second leg to level the match and take it to a last leg decider. The Prince could only set 8 dolls in this decider, and after the Pigeons lead off man Roger Goodall went off with a 5, the writing was on the wall. It was left to Neil Lyon to clean it up and secure another trophy for his side. Well done to Roger, Wayne & Neil for winning the match and adding to their trophy tally.

It was then time for the Sixers Cup, which was made up of some serious big hitters. Before the action began, you could have made a case for each of the players to come out on top, and there is a buzz of anticipation in the room. But no one could have predicted what actually happened. It was an absolute feast of unbelievable throwing, and I think the only thing missing from it was live commentary from the great Sid Waddell. Throughout the final, there were a staggering 7 sixes hit as the crowd were treated to what I believe was the greatest example of throwing at any finals night I have ever been to. At one stage, there was an incredible four consecutive maximums, which was just unreal. Like heavyweight boxers, the players just kept throwing haymakers at each other. It really was outstanding. Going into the final leg, it was all to play for. Neil was holding the lead with 20, Roger was just behind on 19 and Rob was lurking in third with 16 dolls. Rob went first in this last leg, and crashed off his second six of this final to set the clubhouse marker at 22 dolls. When it came to Roger's turn, he backed up the sixes which he had hit in the third & fourth legs by hitting a four to take over the lead with 23 dolls. Neil was left with the final throw, needing a four to win. Just like Rob & Roger, he had also previously hit two maximums in this final, so looked odds on to claim the win. However, he could only hit a two, meaning that Roger claimed the win for the second time (his previous win being back in 2013). Rob & Neil had a playoff to see who claimed the runners up spot, which Neil came out on top in. It was a pleasure to watch this, and the argument that the Wychwood League is the strongest league around gathers strength. Congratulations to Roger for the win, Neil for claiming second and well done to all the players who made this such an awesome final.

It was always going to be difficult to follow that, but we had to move on. It was time for the two Singles Competition Semi Finals. First up was defending champion Mick Foreman, who took on outsider Darren Grant. It turned out to be a stress free victory for Mick, who won in two straight legs to advance to the final. His scores of 4 & 3 proved to be enough to take the win and keep alive his hopes of retaining the trophy. The second semi was between Charlie Buckingham & Neil Lyon, which had the feeling of being a classic. Neil's love of chasing was on show, as Charlie was asked to set in all three legs. Neil comfortably took the opening leg to take an early lead, before the drama really started. Charlie produced a magnificent throw in the second leg by posting a maximum as he looked to level the match. The crowd were thinking that the match would now be all square, but how foolish they were! Neil produced another piece of magic to also hit a maximum to tie the leg, in a moment that again deserved commentary from Sid. Onto the last leg, and Charlie knew that only a win would keep his hopes alive. He set again, and under this pressure he posted an excellent 5 dolls. Knowing that a draw would be good enough, Neil could only hit a 4, meaning that the match went to a 3 stick playoff. With the standard so high, Charlie's set of 1 doll looked like it wouldn't be enough, and this was proved correct as Neil hit a 2 to win this high quality match and advance to the final.

Next on was the Knockout Cup Final, which was between the Black Prince 'B' and Enstone SSC 'B'. Both teams had been excellent throughout the season, winning the Premier & Section One titles, so they were hoping to complete the double. As predicted, it was a very tight match, with very little between the two teams. Enstone took the opening leg, before the Prince hit back to take the next two legs and grab the advantage in the match after chasing down consecutive totals of 17 dolls. With their backs up against the wall, Enstone produced their best leg of the match to post 21 dolls in the fourth leg, which proved to just be enough as the Prince fell just a single doll short with 20 dolls. So, another last leg decider was required to see who the victor would be. Enstone set in this final leg and posted a score of 19 dolls, which was a total that would certainly test the Prince side. However, they passed that test with flying colours. Nigel King got them off to a fantastic start in this chase by hitting a 5 from his lead off position, which was backed up by Henry Johnson hitting a 4. Dave Trim, Mick Foreman & Chris Price kept the scoreboard ticking along, leaving anchorman Mark Poulter requiring just a single doll to take the match, which he hit with his first stick. It was another great final, played between arguably the two best performing teams this year. Congratulations go to the Black Prince 'B', who after claiming the Premier title for their first time, added their first Knockout Cup trophy to finish off was has been a great season for them.

With the clock ticking along, it was now time for the Pairs Final. It was an all Black Prince 'A' affair, with Darren Grant & Dick Walsh taking on Barry & Jon Townsend. The little kip the Townsend brothers had taken between the fours final and this final seemed to do the trick for them, as they secured a straight sets victory. They set 8 dolls between them in the opening leg, which was too many for their opponents to get near. Darren & Dick then set in the second leg, and could only put up a total of 5 dolls, which never looked enough. However, Barry & Jon only just passed it, with Jon hitting his final stick to take the leg and the match. They secured the the title for the first time and they added it to a long list of trophies won by both of them it what have been great careers. Well done to Barry & Jon.

After three hours of compelling action, we finally reached the last match of the night, which as always would be the Singles Final. The question was could Mick Foreman become the first player to successfully defend the trophy, or would Neil Lyon's exceptional form on the night lead him to claiming his maiden Wychwood singles title. It was the predicted tight affair and didn't disappoint. Neil took the opening leg after chasing down Mick's set of 2 dolls to take the lead in the match. Mick set again in the second leg, posting 4 dolls, which Neil matched to take the match into a deciding leg. Mick again went first in this last leg and again set 4 dolls, and again Neil managed to match this score, meaning that he took the title. It was a valiant defence of his title, but Mick came up just short and handed over the crown to Neil.

And that is that! What a night it was.

The list of thanks is always long, so here goes:
- The very hard working staff at Eynsham SSC

- Callers & Sticker Up individuals (Phil Austin, Rob Bradford, Mick Foreman, Henry Johnson, Dan Reading, Roger Goodall, Wayne Townsend & Dick Walsh) And especially Keith Powell, who showed what great spirit there is in our league by requesting to call the Single final.

- Lee Thompson for his mic & projector skills

- The legend Chuck Berry for assisting with the presentation of the trophies

- Witney Trophy Centre, for going above and beyond this year (If you know, then you know!)

- Everyone who donated a raffle prize and took part in the raffle

- Dick Walsh for pestering everyone to have a go on the raffle

- The Oxford Yeoman for delivering me a lovely little gift of thanks for my efforts this year (hic)

- All competition venues ( Middle Barton SSC, Three Pigeons, Masons Arms,  Black Prince, Eynsham SSC, Enstone SSC & Stonesfield SSC

- Every venue, supporter, captain & player from each team

And that's my lot!
We are so proud of our league, and the standard is improving every season. We don't claim to be perfect, but we think we are pretty good at what we do and have provided a competitive league which was fair to all and fun to play in. There are always some issues that we have to deal with, but as a rule the spirit of the game is maintained by all. If anyone has any ideas for improving things then they are more than welcome to join us at our AGM, which will be held in February 2023. A few new faces would be great to see. I can't say my job is easy, and it's certainly frustrating at times when faced with unnecessary complications, but I'm pleased to have been involved in things again this year. I hope everyone enjoys any winter action that they are taking part in, and I'll see you all again next year.

Finals night pictures will be uploaded in due course.
Stay safe everyone.

Over and out

WEEK 25 - 12th OCT - SIXERS CUP PLAYOFF

I'm back! Go on, admit it, you missed me really!

So, since the last time that I was logged in here, there has been some interesting action.

Week 24 was the Semi Final night of the team cups. In the Knockout Cup, Enstone SSC 'B' defeated the Masons Arms 'A' in straight legs, and they were joined in the final by the Black Prince 'B', who scraped through their semi final by defeating the Three Pigeons in a three stick playoff. These two results mean that either Enstone SSC 'B' or the Black Prince 'B' will complete a league & cup double this season. It should be a very interesting final!

In the Supplementary Cup, the Masons Arms 'B' defeated an understrength Oxford Yeoman in straight legs to ease their way into the final, which keeps their hopes of retaining the trophy and completing the double this year very much alive. In the other match, Middle Barton SSC 'B' were taken to a last leg decider by Stonesfield SSC 'B'. Dispite losing the opening leg, the Middle Barton side hit back and went on to take their place in the final in what again looks like it will be a great match.

As for the Sixers Cup Playoff, it was the expected high quality night of action, with some 'big guns' on show. The six highest scorers over five legs would move on to play at finals it what is always a mighty tough trophy to win. After the five legs had been thrown, Rob Bradford (21), Neil Lyon (20), Nigel King & Roger Goodall (Both 19) had taken their places. There was a tie for the final two places, with Charlie Buckingham, Phil Austin & Alan Major all scoring 17 dolls after their five throws, meaning that a further leg was required. It was Charlie & Phil who advanced to the final after this playoff, with Alan being the unlucky player to just be squeezed out. It looked like a great night, and I predict that whoever is sticking up for this final will have a busy time!

That's it for now. The Order of play for Finals Night will be done over the weekend, so keep an eye on the home page.

Cheers all

WEEK 22 - 22nd SEPT - FOURS COMPETITION

I've just about managed to find time to squeeze in a short report on last week's Fours action.
Eynsham hosted Venue One, and it looked like a very entertaining evening. The opening match of the night looked on paper to be a cracker, with a strong looking Black Prince 'B' four taking on the four from the Three Pigeons. It wasn't quite the close match which I would have expected as the Pigeons side hit the ground running and closed off a comfortable 2-0 win. The only Quarter Final which went to a deciding leg was the match between the Masons A and the Black Prince A. Chasing a set of 10 dolls in this decider, it was the Prince anchorman Mick Phipps who got them when he needed to, hitting a four to take the leg and the match. In the Semi Finals, and there was arguably the match of the week between the Three Pigeons and Enstone SSC B. A set of 14 dolls was put on the board in the opening leg by Enstone, which was matched after Pigeons anchorman Neil Lyon knocked off the four required to tie the leg. Enstone set again in the second leg, posting 11 dolls. The Pigeons side looked in deep trouble before Neil stepped up again, hitting a five to once again tie the leg. In the final leg, Enstone set once more and posted 13 dolls. At risk of repeating myself, the Pigeons side again looked like they were in big trouble before, you guessed it, Neil performed some more magical throwing to tie the leg with another five. The three stick playoff was thankfully more straight forwards, with the Pigeons side finally giving Neil a break as their top three throwers went past Enstone's set of 5 dolls. Outstanding throwing Neil, very well done. The Pigeons went on to claim the venue victory after easing to a 2-0 win over the Black Prince A and take their place at Finals Night.
At Venue Two, hosted by Enstone SSC, where there was slightly less drama but still some compelling action. The Black Prince B and Black Prince A both eased through their Quarter Final matches, beating Enstones SSC A and the Queens Head respectively, but there was a much closer match between the other Queens Head side and the Masons Arms. This match required a deciding leg, which the Masons managed to win after chasing and passing the Queens set of 7 dolls. The first Semi Final was a cracker, which was played between the Black Prince B and Eynsham SSC. After a tied first leg, Eynsham set in the second and could only post a score of 8 dolls, which surprisingly the Prince failed to match, putting Eynsham ahead in the match. Eynsham set again in the decider, posting a good score of 12 dolls, but the Prince B came out fighting and knocked of 13 dolls to make things all square. Unfortunately for them, this was as good as things got as they failed to chase down Eynsham's set of 6 dolls in the three sticker, meaning that Eynsham moved through to the venue final. They were joined in the final by the Black Prince A, who defeated the Masons A in their Semi Final. The venue final saw some great scoring from both sides. Eynsham posted 11 dolls in the first leg, to which the Prince replied with 13 dolls from just three players. The Prince then set a big 16 dolls in the second leg, which Eynsham fell just short in chasing with 14 dolls, meaning that the Prince side claimed the venue victory.

Overall, another great night of action and well done to everyone who took part.

WEEK 21 - 15th SEPT - TRIPLES COMPETITION

As promised, here is my short report regarding the action from last week's Triples competition.
Starting off at Venue One, held at the Masons Arms, there was some great scoring and tight matches throughout the evening to keep everyone just about warm enough to battle the chill in the air. It was the trio of Roger Goodall, Wayne Townsend & Neil Lyon from the Three Pigeons who made it through to finals night, but it wasn't without a scare. On paper they were the venue favourites, and after coming through a Prelim match they faced potential spoilers the Black Prince A in the first round. After being put in, the Prince trio of Darren Grant, Ian Grant & Dick Walsh hit 11 dolls between them, which the Pigeons side failed to chase down. With the Pigeons only setting 8 in the second leg it looked like an upset was on the cards, but the Prince fell one doll short in their chase to let the Pigeons off the hook. And after a poor set of only 5 dolls by the Prince in the deciding leg, the Pigeons advanced to the Semi Finals. They managed to dispatch the Queens Head in this Semi Final, helped by chasing and passing the Queen's set of 10 dolls in the opening leg to get to the final. In that final, they came up against the evening's surprise package of Middle Barton SSC B. More on them in a moment. The Pigeons took that final 2-0, with Roger hitting the only six of the night as he continues his quest to chase down Rob Bradford for the Six Hitter Trophy. It nearly went wrong in the second leg though! With the Pigeons chasing only 4 dolls, Roger & Wayne only managed one doll each, and with last man missing his first three sticks things were getting tense, but Neil composed himself and knocked off his final three sticks to claim the leg, and the match, to ensure the Pigeons won the venue. As the Middle Barton SSC, they were fantastic all night long. Being the only side from the Lower Sections, they more than held their own and fully deserved their place in the Venue final. The highlight was their Semi Final match against the other Black Prince A side. This was the venues only match which went to a 3 stick playoff. The Prince set a more than solid 5 dolls, helped by 3 out of 3 from Mick Phipps. However, whatever Mick could do, Lucy Davies for Barton could also do as she recorded a maximum to set her side on the way. With Mark Lacey hitting a 2, it was left to anchor man Steve Rogers to hit the winning doll and record a memorable victory. It was a great night enjoyed by all.
At Venue Two, played at the Black Prince, it was the trio of Barry Townsend, Phil Austin & Jon Townsend who took the honours to set up a mouth watering final against the Pigeons. It was also a night of great matches, with half of the games played going to a deciding leg. Like the Pigeons at venue one, it wasn't all plain sailing for the trio from the Prince, no more so in the actual final. They were up against the trio of Nigel King, Henry Johnson & Mick Foreman from the Prince B, and set a modest total of 7 dolls, which was a score that the Prince B had scored between them in every leg that they had played in the evening. However, funny old game that it is, the set of 7 proved to be enough to see them get through by the skin on their teeth. Mick Foreman was the venues only maximum hitter to take his tally to four for the season. It looked on paper to be another great night.
Well done and thanks to those to took part and helped on the evenings. And as the Middle Barton side proved, anything is possible, so maybe we might get a few more teams enter next season.
Cheers all

WEEK 20 - 8th SEPT - PAIRS COMPETITION

There's no real need for a full report on this week's action, but I will just pick out a few things which I've noticed.
At Venue One, played in tricky conditions in the garden at the Pigeons that could maybe do with a little tlc, the Black Prince 'A' pair of Darren Grant & Dick Walsh made it through to take their place at Finals Night. They 'did enough' to get through their matches, but can count themselves fortunate to win the venue final. In the deciding leg, opponent Jeff Glensiter surprisingly came up short when needing 4 to win to allow the Prince pair to take the win. Jeff had been on fine form earlier in the night, hitting 12 out of 13 sticks thrown in the first round (including the venues only 6), so will no doubt be disappointed to come up short in the final.
At Venue Two, Barry Townsend & Jon Townsend, also from the Black Prince 'A', caused a shock by defeating favourites Roger Goodall & Neil Lyon to make it an all Prince final. The Townsend brothers played well all night long and had some tough matches, no more so than their first round match against Charlie Buckingham & Neil Pratley from The Masons Arms. This match went all the way down to a 1 stick shootout, in which both Barry & Jon both hit the target. Charlie also hit in reply, but Neil narrowly missed meaning that the Townsend's made it through. The final went to a last leg decider after being tied on one leg each, and it was Barry & Jon who chased down the set of 6 dolls to win the venue. Rob Bradford hit the venue's only maximums to move onto 13 for the season in the race for the Six Hitter trophy.
Thanks to all that took part. Triples this week, good luck to all.

REPORT

It was the final week of league action, and the destination of each of the section titles, along with the top doll awards was finally decided. And there was drama right to the final legs.
In the Premier Section, the Black Prince 'B' claimed their first ever winners trophy despite suffering a 6-4 defeat against their closest rivals the Three Pigeons. The Prince knew that they needed two points from the match to secure the title, and they got those vital points in the second leg. The match was a high scoring affair, which was proven in the final leg decider as the Prince set 21 dolls, which the Pigeons beat with 23 dolls. It's been a great campaign by the Prince side, with the whole squad playing an important role at different times of the season. It goes to show that the committee were correct at the start of the season by not listening to their claims that they should be in Section One this year!
The other section which was decided on the night was Section Two. The victors were the Oxford Yeoman, who claimed the title after a fantastic 10-0 home win over Stonesfield SSC 'B'. This result meant that Middle Barton SSC 'A' had to match that score, and although they gave it a good go, they fell short after winning 6-4 away at the Cinnamon Stick. The Yeoman produced their best performance of the season at such a crucial time, which was highlighted in the final leg, with lead off man Doug Mingham hitting his first six of the season, which will have settled the nerves of his teammates. It's been a great end to the season for the Yeoman, who looked out of the running a while ago but stuck at it and managed to claim their second successive league winners title. As for Barton 'B', it's been a great debut season for them, and we hope that they return again next season. Melvin Jewett finished the season on a high note for Barton 'B' with his best score of 14 dolls.

As for the other action, and there were some great performances to ensure the league format ended with a bang. Charlie Buckingham hit his highest score of the season with 23 dolls as the Masons Arms 'A' defeated Section One champions Enstone SSC 'B' 6-4. The match literally went the distance. With Enstone chasing 21 dolls in the last leg decider, anchorman Nathan Wallington missed the last stick of the match to tie the leg, meaning that the Masons claimed the win. The Queens Head continued their superb end of season form and, after winning 10-0 away at Enstone SSC 'A', they moved up to finish as runners up in Section One. They will certainly be a team to watch in the upcoming cup matches. There was a last leg shootout between Chadlington SSC and Eynsham SSC in a very close match. Taking the handicap into consideration, there was just a single doll between the two sides. Chadlington claimed the 6-4 win after taking the final leg, helped by Richard Johnson's six from the lead off position. In the one other top section match, Charlbury SSC  easily defeated the Black Prince 'A' after producing their best performance of the season. They went past their previous best by ten dolls to win the match 9-1, and will no doubt be pleased by the way they ended the season.

In the Lower Sections, the George & Dragon ended a tough season by producing their best performance of the season, hitting 69 dolls to defeated Middle Barton SSC 'B' 8-2. Dave Puddle was the standout performer for the George, hitting 17 dolls to help his side claim the win. The Masons Arms 'B' ended the season with a 7-3 home win over Stonesfield SSC 'A', with the highlight being a 5 in the final leg from Hayley Bennett. It was a busy week for Stonesfield SSC 'A', who played three matches on consecutive days. After losing to the Masons 'B', they won the Stoney Derby 6-4 and then won 8-2 over the Red Lion. The win over Stonesfield SSC 'B' was impressive as they were losing 4-0 after two legs, but hit back to claim the 6-4 win.

OK, thats it for the league action. Well done to everyone, as all matches were completed and no cards were lost! Now onto some competition action. Good luck all!

REPORT

The penultimate week of fixtures saw our second side crowned league winners, with the Masons Arms 'B' wrapping up the Section Three title after an impressive four wins in just over a week. It's been a mighty performance by the North Leigh side this year. After playing catch up at the start of the season due to their commitments in the Winter Darts League, they have gone from strength to strength to claim the title. It's been great to see Hayley & Bryony Bennett play in so many of the fixtures, and I hope they will keep up the good throwing next season.
The Premier title is going down to a last week shootout between the two sides left with a chance of claiming their maiden winners trophy. It's advantage to the Black Prince 'B', who hold an 8 point lead over the Three Pigeons going into the final week. But with the Pigeons hosting this final week title decider, anything can happen. Wouldn't it be great to see a last leg shootout to test the nerves! The Prince 'B' completed the league double over pub rivals the Prince 'A' this week after securing a 6-4 win, whilst the Pigeons kept up the pressure with a 10-0 home win over Enstone SSC 'A'. Neil Lyon was on inspired form for the Pigeons with 23 dolls, which included back to back sixes in the second & third legs. There was a great match between Enstone SSC 'B' and Chadlington SSC, which saw Chadlington win the last leg to secure a 5-5 draw away from home. Richard Johnson had his best night of the season with 22 dolls from the lead off position for Chadlington, whilst Nathan Wallington also had a good night with 16 dolls for Enstone. Eynsham SSC made light work of having a few players away to secure an 8-2 home win over Charlbury SSC, which was helped by Keith Powell hitting his best score of the season with 22 dolls, which included his first six of the season.
The race for the Section Two title is also going down to the final week of the season, with three teams separated by just three points. As it stands, the Oxford Yeoman & Middle Barton SSC 'A' are tied on 78 points, with Middle Barton SSC 'B' just behind on 75 points. All three sides have tricky final matches to play, so it's certainly up for grabs. Before the week started it looked like Middle Barton SSC 'B' had the advantage, but after they suffered two 10-0 defeats in rearranged matches, it will be interesting to see if they can hit back and maybe pip the other two sides to the trophy.
With there being a couple of outstanding cards, no doubt delayed by the Bank Holiday, I'll finish things off there. It's crucial that I get all the cards in from last week and this coming week as soon as possible please so that I can let everyone know who all the winners are. And I can only do this if I have the cards on my desk.
Good luck to all those playing this week, cheers.

REPORT

I'm pleased to start this week's report by announcing that we have our first league winners of the season after Enstone SSC 'B' wrapped up the Section One title, which was done in emphatic style after winning 10-0 away over their closest rivals Charlbury SSC. It has been a mighty performance by the Enstone side, winning 14 of their 16 games played so far this season, and they have been a great addition to our league. This week was another fine performance, with captain Rob Bradford again leading the way with 22 dolls. He was ably assisted by Matty Molyneux (15 dolls) as the Enstone side racked up an impressive 91 dolls. It must be said that Charlbury have also been a great addition to the league, and hopefully both sides will return next year for more action. It's advantage to the Black Prince 'B' in the race for the Premier title after they picked up a huge 10-0 home win over Eynsham SSC, and with their closest rivals the Three Pigeons having a shock 7-3 loss at home against the Queens Head, it means that the Prince 'B' have a 12 point lead with just two matches to play. The Prince 'B' had anchor man Mark Poulter (17 dolls) to thank after he hit the winning dolls in three of the five legs to help claim the big point return. However, it's not all over yet, as the Prince 'B' have the Prince 'A' and the Three Pigeons left to play in their final two matches. You just never know do you? The Queens Head continued their recent fine form to inflict the heavy defeat over the Three Pigeons, with all players chipping in with important dolls at crucial times. The Pigeons will be hoping that the Prince 'A' can do them a favour this coming week to take the league to a last week shootout. Watch this space! It was a mixed week for Chadlington SSC, who first of picked up an impressive 6-4 away win on the Thursday before going down 8-2 at home on the Friday in their rearranged fixture against the Black Prince 'A'. The boys from Chad were on fine form against the Masons, lead by Drew Duncan hitting 17 dolls, even though he started off with a blob. The match did go to a deciding leg, but with the Masons only 16 dolls, Chadlinton went past this total to secure the win. On the following night, Chadlington came up against an inspired Prince 'A', who produced a long overdue strong team effort to claim an 8-2 away win. It was the Prince 'A's second victory of the week, which came after an enjoyable 6-4 away win over Enstone SSC 'A', which was described to me as a great night and great fun. Well done to those who took part in this match.

In the Lower Sections, Middle Barton SSC 'A' took over at the top of Section 2 after claiming a 6-4 away win over Stonesfield SSC 'A'. The match went the distance, but the Middle Barton side produce their best leg of the match in this decider to come away with the win. The question is, can they hold on to the top spot and become the second side to win a league title in their debut season? The George & Dragon picked up their third win of the season, which was done despite Section Two top doll scorer Dave Gardiner not playing. They won 6-4 at home against the Red Lion, who actually started the match fantastically, hitting 18 dolls to win the opening leg. However, the George hit back to take the next two legs, and then two tied legs saw the George get the match win. Finally, there was a rare 5-5 drawn match between the Cinnamon Stick and Stonesfield SSC 'B'. It was Stoney's first action for a few weeks due to postponments, so I'm sure they were delighted to get back to action and secure the draw.

Thats all the team action discussed, but as I've still got wine in my glass I thought I'd quickly mention the chase for the Top Doll awards. The race for the overall Top Doll Scorer is going down to the wire, with Enstone SSC 'B's Rob Bradford currently holding a tiny two doll lead over the Three Pigeons' Roger Goodall. Every stick is going to be crucial to see who comes out on top in this battle, and I certainly wouldn't rule out a draw, so with two games to play, I wish both players good luck. Lets just hope it doesn't rain! Rob has already wrapped up the Section One Top Doll award, and I'm sure he will be delighted to receive his china cup and saucer award at finals night to celebrate this. It also looks like Dave Gardiner from the George & Dragon has secured the Section Two Top Doll trophy for the second year running (if you forget the Covid spoiled things for a couple of years), which goes to show what a class player he is. The Section Three Top Doll award is still up for grabs, with Mark Finch (Red Lion), John Stockford (Cinnamon Stick) & Tom O'Neill (Masons Arms 'B') currently separated by just two dolls, so again this looks like going down to the final few legs of the season.

Glass empty, report complete. Captains, as I've mentioned on the home page, please make an extra effort to get the cards to me asap please.

Thanks all.

REPORT

I know I've previously said that I need to focus my reports on the sides challenging for the titles, but this week I'm going to begin by highlighting a couple of individual performances. The first player is Charlbury SSC's captain John Fitzgerald, whos side made the short trip to play away at Chadlington SSC. In the third leg, Chadlington set a modest total of 14 dolls, which you would have thought Charlbury would have chased down. However, with a couple of blobs in the chase, it was left to John to try and salvage a point as he was left with the anchormans dream of six to tie. You guessed it, John knocked of the maximum to tie the leg and secure a point. Excellent stuff John. The match itself was possibly the closest match of all the games played this season, ending in a 5-5 draw and with both sides hitting 60 dolls. John nearly snatched the win for Charlbury, but fell just one doll short in the final leg, meaning that the points were shared. Another player to mention is Rob Brown from the Queens Head. It was a master class by Rob in the anchorman role, as in four out of the five legs he hit the winning dolls as his side chased down totals set by the Black Prince 'A'. In the opening leg he hit a two to win the leg, the second leg he hit a three to win the leg, the fourth leg it was a four to tie and finally in the last leg, it was a four to win, which in turn won the match for the Queens. It was a pleasure to watch Rob, well played, and the Queens deserved their 7-3 away win. The other player to make the headlines was Neil Lyon from the Three Pigeons. With his side knowing that every leg could prove crucial as they try to close the gap at the top of the Premier table, Neil twice recorded scores of five to win legs, which helped the Pigeons side secure what could be a vital 10-0 home win over the Masons Arms 'A'. Both Neil and teammate Roger Goodall recorded totals of 21 dolls on the night, although you could argue that the difference between the two sides was a seasons best 19 dolls by the Pigeons' Wayne Townsend. Neil Pratley had his second successive score of 20 dolls for the Masons, which included his first six of the season. The gap at the top of the Premier closed up after the Black Prince 'B' suffered their first defeat since way back in week 7, losing the Section One leaders Enstone SSC 'B' 6-4. Enstone raced into a 4-0 lead, before the Prince 'B' hit back to level the match and take it to a decider. The Prince set 16 dolls in the decider, and with Enstone's star man Rob Bradford having a rare off night, it was left to anchorman Nathan Wallington to hit a four to take the leg and the match for Enstone 'B'. In the final match of the Top Sections, Eynsham SSC closed the gap on the sides above them after winning 7-3 at home against Enstone SSC 'A', with Keith Powell returning to form with 17 dolls and Andy Warren hitting his first maximum of the season to continue his fine form.

There was only a couple of games in the Lower Sections, with the focus being on the race for the Section Two title. The Oxford Yeoman have moved to the top of the section after picking up an impressive 9-1 away win over the George & Dragon. It was a fine team performance by the Yeoman, who will be keeping an eye on the results in coming weeks to see if they can hold onto the top spot. Chasing them down are Middle Barton SSC 'A', who won 7-3 at home over the Red Lion. They started strongly, going 6-0 ahead after three legs, but a dissappointing failed chase in the forth leg allowed what could be a crucial two points slip away. These next few weeks in Section Two are certainly going to be interesting! The final match of the week saw the Masons Arms 'B' continue their march towards the Section Three title after winning 8-2 away at the George & Dragon. Pete King rolled back the years after hitting a seasons best 17 dolls for the Masons, which included a six in the opening leg.

Fingers crossed it stays dry this week. There were seven different players hitting a maximum this week, can you lot beat that? Let's give a go.

Cheers

REPORT

Phew. It appears that the action at the moment is as hot as I am whilst writing this!

The race for the Premier title is certainly heading towards boiling point, which at this point seems like a shootout between the Black Prince 'B' and the Three Pigeons. The gap remains at eleven points after both sides picked up impressive 8-2 home wins this week. The Pigeons hit 90 dolls between them on route to their 8-2 win over the Black Prince 'A', who appear to now be out of the running in the title race. It was another strong team performance by the Pigeons, with star men Neil Lyon (21 dolls) & Roger Goodall again registering big numbers, but they were ably backed up by the rest of their side. The Black Prince 'B' hit 88 dolls in their match against Chadlington SSC, with Mick Foreman being the standout performer with 21 dolls. It was a very similar performance to the Pigeons, as all the Prince players scored really well. They kept any blobs off the card, and actually only had a single score of one over the whole of the match. The Masons Arms 'A' backed up their great win last week with another good win, although scoring was slightly down on their big numbers from last week. They were at home against Charlbury SSC, who actually started the strongest by winning the opening leg and drawing the second. However, Charlbury's scores dropped off, which allowed the Masons to hit back and secure a 7-3 home win. If they can pick up a couple of big wins in the next few weeks they might just be in with a shout of the title. They are certainly good enough, and as we all know, it's a funny old game! The Queens Head produced their best performance of the season so far to defeat local rivals Eynsham SSC 9-1 at home. It was almost a clean sweep, but the final leg ended in a draw to make sure Eynsham left with something. Eynsham's Graham Reading was on fine form despite the result by hitting 20 dolls, with Morgan Sykes continuing his fine debut season in our league for the Queens with 17 dolls. The final match in the Top Sections saw the only away win, although I say that tongue in cheek as it was Enstone SSC 'B' who won 10-0 'away' at Enstone SSC 'B'. Rob Bradford excelled again, hitting 25 dolls, and his personal battle with Roger Goodall for the Top Doll Scorer trophy is certainly going to go down to the wire.

In the Lower Sections, there was again only one away victory, which was by the Masons Arms 'B', who secured a 10-0 win at the Red Lion. It was the second match in a coiple of days for the Lion, and the Mason's took full advantage of this, helped by 16 dolls from Tom O'Neill. The Red Lion's other match was the rearranged fixture away at Middle Barton SSC 'B', and this was a much closer affair. The match went to a last leg shootout, in which Barton set and posted a score of 12 dolls, which proved to be enough to take the win and keep them at the top of Section Two. Chasing them hard are Middle Barton SSC 'A', who had a very entertaining match against the George & Dragon. The George opened up a lead after winning the opening two legs, and with a tied third leg the writing was on the wall for the Barton side. However, they hit back to win the final two legs to secure what could be a vital 5-5 draw. Finally, the Oxford Yeoman picked a big 8-2 home win over the Cinnamon Stick, helped by Joe Langford having his best night of the season so far by hitting 17 dolls.

I'm off to apply a layer of talc ready for tonights action, see you next week!

REPORT

Just like day three in a golf tournament, it feels like it is moving day in the race for the titles for the 2022 season. Starting off in the Premier Section, and the Black Prince 'B' continued their fine form to open up an eleven point lead at the top of the table after winning 8-2 away at Charlbury SSC. It was another great team effort by the Prince side, with lead off man Henry Johnson being the match top scorer with 20 dolls. Charlbury's lead off man also had a good night, coming in with 18 dolls. The Three Pigeons have moved into second position and appear to be the best placed side to chase down the gap after securing a 5-5 draw away at Eynsham SSC. Things were looking worrying for the Pigeons as they were 5-1 behind after three legs, but they hit back to win the final two legs to claim a share of the spoils. It was a very close match, and if you take the handicap into consideration, both sides hit 96 dolls in total.  Roger Goodall hit the only six in the league in the opening leg, but it was the Pigeons anchor man Neil Lyon who hit the match and league highest score of the week with 21 dolls. Eynsham's lead off man Martin Few had his best night of the season with 16 dolls, which was a total  matched by second man Alan Major. The Black Prince 'A' fell to third in the table after suffering a heavy 8-2 defeat against old rivals the Masons Arms 'A'. It was a mighty performance by the Masons, who hit back after the disappointment of last week to show just how good a side they are. The Prince had no answer to the Masons continually chasing down their totals, and only secured the last leg due to Masons captain Charlie Buckingham generously dropping himself. Neil Pratley was the match top scorer with 20 dolls, but it really was a great team effort by the Masons with every player hitting good scores. Enstone SSC 'A' finally managed to pick up their first win of the season after winning 6-4 away at Chadlington SSC. Enstone have been unlucky on more than one occasion this year, so will no doubt be delighted to finally get over the line. It was a close run thing, with the last leg ending in a draw meaning that Enstone took the victory. It was a good night for the Enstone middle order, with Nick Jones, Chris Taylor & John Blake all hitting important dolls to help their side to victory. In the other match in the Top Sections, leaders Enstone SSC 'B' hit back from being 0-4 behind to win 6-4 at home against the Queens Head. The last leg was tight, and it needed a 4 from Ian Widdows and a 3 from anchor man Nathan Walington to see Enstone to the win.

In the Lower Sections, the race for the Section Two title appears to be a shootout between the two Middle Barton Social Club sides. The 'B' side hold a narrow three point advanatage at the moment, although they were held this week to a 5-5 draw away at local rivals the Cinnamon Stick. The Cinnamon Stick produced their best performance of the season so far, but it was the Social Club side who won a low scoring final leg to tie the match. Cinnamon's anchor man John Stockford was on fine form, hitting his seasons best score of 18 dolls. Middle Barton SSC 'A' kept up the pressure at the top of the table after winning 6-4 at home over the dangerous Oxford Yeoman. This was in part due to a seasons best score of 16 dolls by the 'B' sides Tony Bass, whilst the Yeoman will be cursing after having a few blobs on the card which prevented them from possibly getting more points from the match. The Red Lion picked up a 7-3 away win over Stonesfield SSC 'B', which was helped by captain Graham Mills hitting 13 dolls. The opening leg for Stoney was a strange one, with Adam Holmes the only Stoney player to trouble the scoring. Well done Adam! Finally, the Masons Arms 'B' moved clear at the top of Section Three after securing a 7-3 home win over the George & Dragon, with captain Mark Bennett top scoring with 14 dolls .

Thats all folks. Captains, please don't forget to circle who sets.

Cheers

REPORT

Thankfully, I'm a little less sweaty this week, so hopefully I can avoid making any spelling mistakes!

With the end of the league season now firmly in sight, I really should start to focus my reports on the sides challenging at the top of the sections. But this week, I'm going to start somewhere else. It relates to the match between the George & Dragon and Stonesfield SSC 'B', which was held in Long Hanborough. The match was a tight affair, with the opening two legs both tied. The George hit a big total of 20 dolls in the third leg to move 4-2 ahead, before Stonesfield bounced back to take the final two legs to claim a 6-4 away win. The last leg was won by just a single doll, which shows just how tight the match was. However, the match was one thing, but there was something else which came out of this match which actually touched me. Not intending on embarassing him, but the George captain Colin Baldwin took the time to write me some notes on the back of the card. He informed me that they had a fantastic night playing in the match, and made reference to how great the away side were, turning up with around 20 people. Colin added, and I quote "The result shows how the handicap seems to work and the fun element is just what the lower leagues should be". With issues happening in other leagues, which lets face it could have been avoided, it was very heart warming to read these comments and was a reminder to us all that our game should be about enjoyment first of all. Colin did also mention that Stonesfield's Geoff Booth has set up a throw in his garden, which might have helped him in hitting 17 dolls, the highest individual score in Section Three so far this season. I might have a word with my old footy gaffer about this!!

Now moving onto the other action, and week 13 was the week when our two undefeated sides tasted defeat for the first time. In the Top Sections, the Three Pigeons inflicted an 8-2 defeat over Section One runaway leaders Enstone SSC 'B' to move themselves right into contention for the Premier title. I said in my report in week 6 that people should keep an eye on them. The overall top three doll scorers were all in action in this match, and they didn't disappoint, with Roger Goodall (24 dolls), Rob Bradford (22 dolls) & Neil Lyon (20 dolls) all having great nights. In the Lower Sections, Middle Barton SSC 'A' inflicted a first defeat of the season to the Masons Arms 'B', winning the match 6-4. It was a tight match, with two drawn legs, but it was the side from Middle Barton who came away with the victory. Moving back up to the Top Sections, and the Black Prince 'B' made it five wins on the bounce with a huge 10-0 win away over the Masons Arms 'A'. On paper, I was thinking that this match could go either way, but the Prince 'B' took full advantage of a strangly under par performance from the Mason's to rack up the big win. This result moves them seven points clear at the top of the Premier table, and with performances like this, where they hit 98 dolls, it will take a big effort from the chasing pack to deny them their first title. The Black Prince 'A' are their closest challengers, and they recorded an 8-2 win over Eynsham SSC. It was another fixture which on paper could have gone either way, but it was the home side who gained some  revenge for their recent cup defeat who took the win. Prince anchor man Mick Phipps hit the dolls when he needed them to secure leg wins in the final two legs, whereas Eynsham anchor man Keith Powell will be frustrated by his mixed bag of throwing on an ally he normals throws so well on. The Queens Head picked up an overdue victory over Chadlington SSC, winning at home 6-4. It went the distance, with the match tied 4-4 going into the final leg, but the Queens anchor man Nick Baldwin nailed the 3 dolls required in this final leg to secure the win for the home side. Finally, there was another last leg decider in the match between the Oxford Yeoman and Middle Barton SSC 'B' in an extremely close match. Middle Barton's final two players hit big scores in this leg (Steve Rogers 5, Mark Lacy 4) to help their side get over the line and claim the 6-4 win.

Phew, that was an effort!

Thanks for reading, and remember, it's supposed to be fun.

One last thing, can captains make sure you circle who sets in each leg please. It makes my report a bit easier to write if I know this, and means that I can give those hard working anchormen the credit which they deserve!

Cheers all

Go on, admit it, you've missed me haven't you? Bit of a busy few weeks, so sorry for being a little behind with things. It's all up to date again now.

I'll start off the report by just touching on events which have happened before last week. The Singles Competition was played over two busy venues on the 7th July. It was great to see the event was well supported, and it again provided a couple of surprise on who made it through to play at finals night. At venue one, Charlie Buckingham made it through after not losing a leg all evening, and he was joined by Neil Lyon, who had a scare in his first round match which he won after a 1 stick shootout. At venue two, Mick Foreman was in fine form in defending his title, coming through tough matches against Rob Bradford, Keith Powell & Henry Johnson to get to finals night. The final player to make it through was Darren Grant, who like Neil won a 1 stick shootout to make it through. Well done to all.

There was action on Sunday 10th, with the Preliminary matches of the Knockout Cup being played. There was a shock as Eynsham SSC showed just what a dangerous side they are by defeating the Black Prince 'A' 6-2. Eynsham were in superb form on the day, winning legs with scores of 20,23 & 21 dolls, with their card containing only one score of 1, so it really was a great team effort. They were joined in the first round proper by Charlbury SSC, who made the trip to Chadlington SSC for their match. Charlbury had too much for Chadlington to handle, winning the opening three legs to record a comfortable victory.

I'll now move onto the league action from last week, and the race for the Premier title is as hot as I am writing this report! Only six points separate the top four sides, with fifth placed Eynsham SSC only eleven points behind so certainly not out of it. The Black Prince 'B' have taken over at the top of the table after securing a 10-0 home win over Enstone SSC 'A'. It was another great night of scoring for the Prince side, and they are definately the in form side in the league at the moment. Nigel King had his best night of the season for the Prince, hitting a six on his way to 22 dolls. The Black Prince 'A' became the first side this season to get a positive scoreline against Enstone SSC 'B' by grabbing a 5-5 draw. To be honest, the Prince should have come away with a win, but they failed to chase down a reachable target in the final leg so had to settle for the draw. Will anyone actually beat the Enstone side or can they remain undefeated all season? Rob Bradford had yet another great night of scoring, hitting another maximum on his way to 24 dolls and moving into the 200 club for the season. Also in the 200 club are Roger Goodall & Neil Lyon, who's dolls this week helped the Three Pigeons secure a 7-3 away win over Chadlington SSC. The match was poised going into the final leg, but a set of 19 dolls was enough to see the Pigeons side to victory. There was a tight match between Eynsham SSC and the Masons Arms A, which had two tied legs in it. It was the Masons who were the more consistant of the two sides, and their form has certainly picked up as we move towards the business end of the season. Andy Warren continued his good form shown in the Prelim match by hitting 18 dolls for Eynsham. In the remaining top section match, Charlbury SSC consolidated their second spot in Section One after winning 8-2 at home against the Queens Head.
In the Lower Sections, Stonesfield SSC 'B' produced the surprise result of the week by winning 6-4 at home against Middle Barton SSC 'A'. It was Stoney's best performance of the season so far, and they secured the victory by winning a last leg decider. They set 13 dolls in this last leg, which was a total which the Middle Barton side were unable to chase down and gave the Stonesfield side the morale boosting win.The Cinnamon Stick also recorded a fine victory, winning 8-2 at home against the Red Lion. John Stocked had a good night's work for the Cinnamon Stick, with his 13 dolls proving crucial from his anchorman position. Middle Barton SSC 'B' claimed an important victory to move to the top of Section Two, winning 7-3 at home against Stonesfield SSC 'A'. The difference makers were Middle Barton's bottom three players, with Steve Rogers top scoring with 16 dolls, sandwhiched between Chris Stewart & Mark Lacey (both 14 dolls). Finally, the Masons Arms 'B' also picked up a home win, as they defeated the Oxford Yeoman 8-2 to open up a small gap at the top of Section Three.

Right, thats me done. I'm off for an ice bath. Jeepers it's hot! Stay safe everyone.

REPORT

There was a couple of postponed matches this week, so you will be pleased to read that it will be slightly shorter report than normal!

For those of you who read my report back in week 5, I mentioned that Roger Goodall had his eye on breaking the Wychwood record. Don't panic, Rob Bradfords incredible effort last week of 28 dolls hasn't been broken already, but Roger did come in with 26 dolls (6,5,5,5,5), which puts him joint 2nd (or equal 3rd?) on the hot list. I should mention that Roger also hit a 6 in the beer leg! Fantastic throwing Roger, well done. Roger's efforts, along with the rest of his team enable the Three Pigeons to pick up a maximum 10-0 away win over Charlbury SSC, which puts them right back in the mix in the Premier title chase. The Pigs hit a huge 104 dolls in the match, which is the highest amount hit by any side so far this season. The Black Prince 'B' continued their fine recent form by winning 8-2 at home against the Queens Head, which moved them level on points at the top of the table. The Queens actually won the opening leg, but then the Prince 'B' clicked into gear and hit some good numbers to collect the big win. The Masons Arms 'A' now sit just one point behind the leaders after picking up a 10-0 home win over Enstone SSC 'A'. It was another match where the Enstone side can count themselves unlucky as they lost the first four legs by just one or two dolls. Their luck just has to change sometime soon. The final match in the Top Sections saw Enstone SSC 'B' remain undefeated at the top of the Section One table after beating Eynsham SSC 6-4 at home.
In the Lower Sections, there was a very tight match between the Oxford Yeoman and Stonesfield SSC 'A'. Stonesfield were the away side, and picked up a 8-2 win, but the match was much closer than the score suggests. Three of the legs which Stonesfield won were won by just a single doll. They set in each of these legs, so I wonder if the Yeoman anchor man has been given a vote of confidence by his teammates or not? This result means that Stonesfield 'A' are tied at the top of Section Three with the Cinnamon Stick, who won a last leg decider at home against the George & Dragon to secure a 6-4 win. Finally, Middle Barton SSC 'A' picked up a 6-4 away win over the Swan Hotel, who produced a much better performance than of recent weeks.I have a feeling that the race for the Section Two title is going to go down to the wire, so these six points for the Middle Barton side could be crucial.
Job done. Good luck to everyone playing in the singles this week. I'm a touch behind on the stats, but I'll get everything back up to date as soon as possible. Cheers

REPORT

What a week! I reckon it was a good week to be an Aunt Sally player. It was great to see those who made it over to Charlbury and helped to make it a great day.

As for our action, I'll start things off in the Lower Sections, where there were some close matches and some last leg drama. Comeback kings this week were the Oxford Yeoman, who played away at Stonesfield SSC B. The home side began strongly, winning the opening two legs to take a 4-0 lead. However, the Yeoman side hit back to win the final three legs and secure a 6-4 win. There was another last leg decider involving the other Stonesfield side, as the 'A' side travelled to play the Red Lion. It was a very close match, and going into the last leg the Lion held a 5-3 lead. Stonesfield set 12 dolls, which the Lion chased down with their first five players to tie the leg. It could have been a 7-3 victory for the Lion, but anchor man Marcus Copelin came back without scoring in that last leg meaning that the leg was tied. I'm sure they were happy with any margin of win, no matter what it was. The Lion's Mark Finch picked up his first maximum of the season which would have made the beer taste even better. Middle Barton SSC 'A' closed the gap to the Section Two leaders after an impressive 8-2 home win over local rivals the Cinnamon Stick. The Cinnamon Stick took the opening leg, but then Middle Barton SSC 'A' hit some good form to take the remaining legs to secure the big win. Anchor man John Gubbins was on fine form for the Social Club, hitting an excellent 18 dolls. The Masons Arms 'B' managed a clean sweep 10-0 home win over the Swan, which was helped by some fine throwing by Hayley Bennett, who had a personal best 11 dolls. Bragging rights around the dinner table for Hayley this week, good shooting! In the final Lower Section match, the George & Dragon made home advantage count by defeating the Middle Barton SSC 'B' 6-4, and will be hoping that a good run of results is ahead of them to get back in the hunt for the Section One title.

In the Top Sections, and if you've read my comments on the home page you will already aware of Rob Bradford's scoring in the match between Enstone SSC 'B' and the Masons Arms 'A'. The match itself was a great contest, which could have gone either way. It was tied at 4-4 going into the last leg, but an under par set by the Masons allowed Enstone to claim the victory. It was good to see a much improved performance by the Masons, who were back hitting the numbers which we know they are capable of hitting, and they could have a strong second half to the league if their form continues. The Black Prince 'B' had a fantastic night by hitting 92 dolls, which was their highest total by a long way so far this season. However, it was only just good enough as their opponents, the Three Pigeons, hit a total of 91 dolls! The highlight of the match was leg four, in which the Prince 'B' set 23 dolls. The Pigeons chased hard, and left anchor man Neil Lyon 6 to draw. Painfully, Neil missed his last stick, meaning that the Pigeons ended that leg just one doll short. It was still a good night for Neil, who along with the Prince's Mick Foreman, came in with 21 dolls.Charlbury SSC secured an impressive 8-2 away win over a weakened Black Prince 'A', which means the Premier Section title race is wide open. Captain John Fitzgerald ended the night on a good note with a six in the last leg for Charlbury. Chadlington SSC also secured an impressive away victory, winning 7-3 at Eynsham SSC. Richard Johnson lead the way for Chadlington, hitting 19 dolls from the tricky lead off position. Finally, the Queens Head picked up a much needed 8-2 home win over Enstone SSC 'A' to move up the Section One table.

Catch you all later.

REPORT

Bit busy at Wychwood HQ, so just a brief report this week.

In the Top Sections, and Premier leaders the Black Prince 'A' suffered a surprise defeat against the Black Prince 'B' in the BP classico. The match was tied at 4-4 going into the final leg, but with the 'A' side only setting 15 dolls, it was the 'B' team who won the leg and in turn recorded a moral boosting 6-4 win. All the 'B' team players chipped in with important dolls, and they capped off a good nights work by winning the beer leg. Charlbury SSC bounced back from their disappointing defeat last week to return to winning ways by defeating Eynsham SSC 6-4, who were slightly down on dolls following a good recent run of performances. There were two other comfortable away wins. The first of which saw the Queens Head defeat the Masons Arms 8-2 in what appeared to be a tight match, and the other away win saw Section One leaders Enstone SSC 'B' cruise to a 10-0 win at Chadlington SSC.

In the Lower Sections, the Middle Barton SSC derby ended with the spoils being shared after a 5-5 draw between the 'A' and 'B' sides. The 'B' side trailed 5-3 going into the last leg, and when they could only set a total of 9 dolls they must have feared the worst. However, the 'A' side fell one doll short, meaning that the match was draw. The Famous OYA were brought back down to earth after back to back 10-0 wins by suffing a 6-4 home defeat against Le Rouge Lyon. The match went the distance, but it was the away side who won the last leg and the match. The Masons Arms 'B' also had a good away win, winning 7-3 at Section Three leaders the Cinnamon Stick, and there was also an away win for Stonesfield SSC 'B', who defeated the Swan 7-3. Finally, Stonesfield SSC 'A' defeated the George & Dragon 8-2 at home. The George took the opening leg of the match, but it was one way traffic after that, and it ended with the Stonesfield side hitting a seasons best 18 dolls in the final leg.

Back next week, cheers all.

JASON ELEY - ENSTONE SSC 'A'

REPORT

It was a slighty strange round of fixtures this week, with scores a bit lower than what we have been seeing so far this season. There was only one maximum hit, which was by Jason Eley of Enstone SSC 'A', and there were no entries into the Big Hitters club. I think there was too much partying for the Jubilee Weekend!

I'll kick things off in the Lower Sections, where there was a closely contested match between the Red Lion and the George & Dragon. The George side set in every leg, and managed to just about set high enough totals to take the match 6-4 and get back to winnings ways after a recent dip in form. Dave Gardiner was back in action for the George and top scored with 16 dolls. Middle Barton SSC 'B' suffered their second successive defeat, this time away at the Masons Arms 'B', who continued to move up the Section Three table. Tom O'Neill's 14 helped the Masons record a 7-3 win, with Lucy Davies hitting14 dolls for the Barton side. Both the Stonesfield sides suffered 6-4 defeats in close matches against the Cinnamon Stick & Middle Barton SSC 'A'. It was great to see two full squads in action in the Stonesfield 'B' match against the Cinnamon Stick, so well done captains for juggling things around. The Oxford Yeoman completed the action in the Lower Sections by completing a clean sweep 10-0 win away against the Swan, with Doug Mingham again on good form with 15 dolls for the Yeoman side.

In the Top Sections, and there was only one side who recorded an away victory, and that side was the Three Pigeons. They travelled to play the Queens Head, and managed to produce a solid team performance to come away with an 8-2 win. There was a top of the table clash in Section One, with Enstone SSC 'B' hosting Charlbury SSC. It turned out to be a comfortable evening for the Enstone side, with Charlbury putting in their worst performance of the season to allow Enstone to win 9-1. The only Top Section match which required a last leg decider was between Chadlington SSC and the Masons Arms 'A'. With the match tied at 4-4, The Masons could only set a total of 12 in the final leg, which Chadlington cruised past to secure a 6-4 home win. Eynsham SSC had another promising week, and continue to move up the Premier table after defeating the Black Prince 'B 7-3 at home. It was a good effort by the Eynsham side, and after a poor opening leg they hit some decent scores to pick up the win. Finally, the Black Prince 'A' secured a another big win, this week defeating Enstone SSC 'A'. However, just as it was last week, the Prince can count themselves lucky to have won 8-2, as with a bit of luck going the way of the Enstone side, they could have come away as the victors.

Thanks all, good luck this week.

REPORT

The extended Bank Holiday put our bin collections back a few days, and also delayed my report! Still, I'm back on track now with everything updated.

There were two results which stood out to me from last weeks action, so that's where I will begin my report. Section Two leaders Middle Barton SSC 'B' hosted Stonesfield SSC 'B', with their undefeated record on the line. It was a very tight match, which contained a couple of tied legs, and went the distance with a last leg decider required. It was the away side who set in this leg, and posted their highest total of the season by setting 15 dolls, which the home side were unable to chase down, meaning that they tasted defeat for the first time this season. The other match of interest saw another side defeated for the first time this season, which was Charlbury SSC. They hosted Chadlington SSC, who made the short trip without their main man Richie Johnson. This didn't seem to worry them, as they raced into a 6-0 lead after three legs. It was close though, as they chased down scores in the opening two legs to pinch them by just a single doll. Drew Duncan led the way for Chadlington, playing in the lead off man's position and coming in with 12 dolls, but there were also good contributions from Tommy Burden, Mike Benson & Dan Cleevely. As for Charlbury, George Williams continued his good recent form with 16 dolls.

As for the other seven matches which took place, and home advantage counted for nothing as there was only one side that picked up a home win. That side was the Oxford Yeoman, who secured a clean sweep 10-0 win over a weakened George & Dragon. The George side, who were without Section Two top doll scorer Dave Gardiner, had no reply to the Yeoman lads, who produced a really good team display. They named a full squad of nine players, which captain Sam Walker did well to juggle his selections as there were only two blobs on their card. I'm sure that with the Bank Holiday the following day, there might have been an extra beer or two enjoyed by them, especially by Harry Irwin, who recorded a seasons best score of 15 dolls.

Enstone SSC 'B' were given a scare by the Black Prince 'B', winning the last leg decider to stay unbeaten after winning the match 6-4. Rob Bradford showed that he might have played a couple of matches at the Prince before by hitting 21 dolls to enter the 100 club, whilst Mick Foreman continued his excellent form in hitting 19 dolls for the Prince. There was also a last leg decider required in the match between Enstone SSC 'A' and Eynsham SSC. With the match tied at 4-4, Eynsham saved their best leg of the match for this decider, posting a score of 19 dolls which the Enstone side were unable to chase down. The Three Pigeons picked up a much need victory in their bid to move up the Premier table, coming away with an 8-2 win from their trip to play the Masons Arms 'A'. After becoming the first player to go past 100 dolls this season, Roger Goodall continued his impressive form with 21 dolls, and he was joined in the 100 club by teammate Neil Lyon, who hit a solid 17 dolls. The Pigeons lead off man Antony Algar hit his first six of the season on his way to 16 dolls, whilst Ray Townsend also showed signs of a return to form. The Pigeons will certainly be a side to keep an eye on over the coming weeks.

There were two other last leg deciders, which were both won by the away side to secure points. Middle Barton SSC 'A' won their last leg shootout in their match away against the Red Lion to claim a 6-4 victory, with John Seymour on fine form for the Barton side with 15 dolls. The other last leg decider was won by the Masons Arms 'B', who managed to secure a 5-5 draw in their match away at Stonesfield SSC 'A'. Hayley & Bryony Bennett both hit crucial dolls in the match, and it was Bryony who hit the winning doll in that final leg. The final match of my report saw the Black Prince 'A' record a surprise clean sweep 10-0 away win against a weakend Queens Head side. The Queens played with five players, and from looking at the scores that made the difference, as if a sixth man was playing i feel certain that they would have taken at least two legs.

Thats me done. Just a reminder to get the competition entry forms in to me asap please. We always try and reward teams that enter with an invite to be a host venue, which gives places an extra night of revenue. And for those of you thinking that there is no point entering as the favourites always win, I can tell you that is hardly ever true. Both the Wychwood and Oxford League competitions have been regulary won by players who, with no disrespect, would not have been favourites before the start, so get your names down and give it a go! It could be your year!

I'm aiming to do next weeks report & stats on Wednesday, so cards into me by then please.

REPORT

Funny old game isn't it. Good weather normally brings lots of dolls, but it seemed like it was a quiet week in terms of big numbers. The other slightly strange thing about this week is that there were six 8-2 victories, although from reading the cards these matches were a lot closer than the score suggested.

Starting oof in the Lower Sections, and there was a very tight match between the Cinnamon Stick and the Oxford Yeoman. There was just a single doll between the two sides, which just shows how close things were. However, the Cinnamon Stick took advantage of being the home side to record a 7-3 win. It was the best nights work of the season so far by the Cinnamon Stick, with all players chipping in with important dolls. But special mention goes to the Yeoman's lead off man Doug Mingham, who came in with an excellent 18 dolls. It was the first Stoney derby of the season, with Stonesfield 'B' hosting Stonesfield 'A'. Crowd control was thankfully managed better than the Champions League final, and the match was nip and tuck, going down to a last leg decider. It was the 'A' side that took this final leg to secure a 6-4 win and more importantly claim bragging rights in the club afterwards. Middle Barton SSC 'A' made home advantage count by securing a 6-4 win against the George & Dragon. They went 6-0 up after the first three legs, but the George & Dragon managed to hit back and take the final two legs to limit the damage. Middle Barton SSC 'B' made it a clean sweep for the Barton sides this week after winning 8-2 away at the Swan Hotel, which was helped by Chris Stewart's 14 dolls. Finally, The Masons Arms 'B' got back into the swing of things after defeating the Red Lion 8-2 at home, and will certainly be looking to move up the table over the next few weeks.
In the Top Sections, the Black Prince 'B' were the only team to pick up an away win, defeating Chadlington SSC 6-4. It was an up and down performance by the Prince, setting only 9 dolls in leg three, but then hitting 20 dolls in leg four. I told you that it's a funny old game. The Black Prince 'A' secured an 8-2 home win over the Three Pigeons, although the Pigeons can count themselves unlucky to not pick up the win in a very close match. Roger Goodall was in mighty form again this week, following up last weeks 23 dolls with another 23 doll haul this week (2,5,5,5,6). He certainly is on fire at the moment, and it wouldn't surprise me if the Wychwood record is broken soon. Charlbury SSC continued their impressive start to the season in defeating the Masons Arms 'A' 8-2 at home with a solid team performance, and Eynsham SSC completed the action with another good team effort to collect an 8-2 home win over the Queens Head.

Good luck this week all, lets see some big scores to get the Jubilee Weekend off with a bang!

REPORT

A nice easy report this week due to many missing cards. Can all captains address this please before I start docking points (See Rules 13 & 14 people).

Starting in the Top Sections, it was a night for the away sides, as no team playing at home managed to pick up a win. The only home side to avoid defeat were the Black Prince 'B, who hosted Charlbury SSC. The Prince 'B' were leading 5-3 going into the last leg, in which they set 17. However, Charlbury anchor man George Williams whipped off 3 dolls to win the leg, and tied the match up at 5-5. Mick Foreman was in fine form for the Prince 'B', hitting 21 dolls (4,6,4,5,2) to be the match & weekly top scorer. Old rivals the Masons Arms 'A' hosted the Black Prince 'A' in a fixture which is always a close match, and this match went the distance and needed a last leg decider to see who claimed the win. The Prince 'A' started strongly, winning the opening two legs, before the Masons hit back to level the match up at 4-4. It was the Prince 'A' who set in the decider, and they posted an average total of 18. However, it proved to enough as the Masons came up short, meaning that the Prince 'A' took the match 6-4. Skipper Phil Austin was on good form again for the Prince 'A', coming in with 19 dolls. Chadlington SSC made the short journey to play against Enstone SSC 'A', and had their best week of the season so far by a long way. After losing the opening leg, the chaps from Chadlington hit back to win all of the remaining legs to collect a morale boosting 8-2 win. Richard Johnson was the match top scorer with 19 dolls, however special mention goes to Drew Duncan, who came in his best week's work so far in hitting 17 dolls, which included a six in the third leg. Great chucking fella. The final Top Section game to report on was between the Queens Head & Enstone SSC 'B', which looked like a very close match. Enstone 'B' took the opening leg after setting 18 dolls, although they must have been holding their breath as the Queens anchor man Lee Thompson almost completed the anchor man's dream of hitting the six required, missing his last stick as the Queens came up short with 17 dolls. The remaing legs were shared between the two sides, with Enstone 'B' continuing their unbeaten start to the season in securing a 6-4 victory. Lee finished up with 20 dolls (5,3,5,3,4), playing in an unusual anchor man role.

In the Lower Sections, Middle Barton SSC 'B' picked up another win after defeating the Cinnamon stick at home in one of few local derbies which are due to be played this season. It looked like it was a good match, with two big squads all taking part, which is what we like to see. Mark Lacey was the difference between the two sides, hitting 16 dolls to help the Middle Barton 'B' side to a 6-4 win. Finally, the Red Lion managed to secure a 6-4 home win over Stonesfield SSC 'B', in another match which featured two large squads. It's never easy juggling who to play in which leg, so well done captains for organising your troops so well.

That's it for this week. I'll now go back to looking at the letterbox to see if some more cards arrive......

REPORT

We are starting to get back into the old routines, which are producing some good early season scoring.

I'll kick off the report in the Lower Sections, where newbies Stonesfield SSC 'B' managed to pick up their first victory in only their second match by defeating the George & Dragon 6-4 at home. The match was tied 4-4 going into the final leg, in which the George team set a total of 11. It was left to anchor man & captain Dave Holloway to secure the win for the home side after hitting the three dolls required. Middle Barton SSC 'B hosted the Oxford Yeoman in a match between two sides who will be hoping for a push towards league table this year. It was the home side that were victorious, coming out  with an 8-2 win after a solid team performance. The Masons Arms 'B' kicked off their league schedule with a promising 9-1 home win over Middle Barton SSC 'A'. It was great to see the ladies in the team hitting important dolls in the match which were massive in helping the home side to the win.The only away victory in the Lower Sections was picked up by Stonesfield SSC 'A', who produced an impressive team effort to secure a 8-2 win at the Cinnamon Stick. Ben Tomlin was on good form for the away team by scoring 14 dolls.

In the Top Sections, there was a very impressive away win for the Queens Head, who made the journey to Chadlington SSC. It was Chadlington who set in the first three legs, but the total which were set were comfortably passed by the Queens side. A tied forth leg of 17 each was followed by the Queens setting 16 in the final leg, which Chadlington fell short in chasing down. The Masons Arms 'A' came away from their visit to the Black Prince 'B' with an impressive 8-2 victory, which was helped by good throwing by lead off man Spencer Buckingham and ever dependable anchor man Charlie Buckingham. Enstone SSC 'B' were the only side in the Top Sections who secured a home win after defeating the Three Pigeons 9-1. The Enstone side have certainly started the season strongly, and it will be interesting to see if they can maintain the high scores which they have hit so far. It's been a tough start for the Pigeons side, but I can only see their results improving and think they will be someone to keep an eye on. Finally, after last week's heavy defeat, the Black Prince 'A' were just about able to get back to winning ways after winning a last leg decider away at Eynsham SSC. The Prince went 4-0 up, before some good chucking got the Eynsham side back into the match at 4-4. However, with a set of 15 from the home side, the Prince were able to stroll past this and grab the win.

A couple of hard copies of scorecards missing again, but I'm as up to date as I can be.

Good luck this week all

REPORT

Week two, some fine weather and some big scores! It's all coming flooding back isn't it!

The report begins with the Black Prince 'A', who hosted Enstone SSC 'B'. The fortress which is normally their home throw was not just knocked down, it was demolished. After losing the opening leg, the chaps from Enstone went on to win the next four legs to record a big 8-2 win, which in part was due to Rob Bradford the genius (His words, not mine - I have other descriptive words which I will refrain from using). Rob came away with 25 dolls on the night (6,4,4,6,5), which really is top throwing. And he won the card in the bar afterwards. Feel free to insert a smug grin emoji here. Phil Austin top scored for the Prince with an excellent 23 dolls (4,3,5,6,5) and can feel unlucky to be on the losing side. Staying in the Top Sections, and the Masons Arms 'A' had a strong home performance against an under performing Eynsham SSC, winning 9-1. Charlie Buckingham continued his good early season form with 21 dolls. The only other Top Section fixture which I've received the card for was between Enstone SSC 'A' and the Black Prince 'B', which went the distance and required a last leg decider. It was the Prince who managed to win this last leg, which ment the spoils were shared 5-5. Jason Eley was certainly enjoying playing again, hitting 19 dolls which included his first 6 of the season. Mark Poulter had a game for the Prince and top scored for them with 21 dolls.

In the Lower Sections, and Middle Barton SSC 'A' played their first every match in the league and managed to open up with a 8-2 home win over another side playing their first game, Stonesfield SSC 'B'. It was a good team effort by the Middle Barton team, with everyone chipping in important dolls. It was good to see the Stonesfield team field a team of eight players, with everyone playing at least three legs, so well done skipper Dave Holloway. The George & Dragon were another side that produced a fine team effort in picking up a 9-1 home win over the Swan Hotel. Dave Gardiner was again on good form, hitting 18 dolls. There was a last leg decider in the match between the Red Lion and the Cinnamon Stick, which actually went down to the last stick of the match. In this decider, the Cinnamon Stick set 13 dolls, and Red Lion anchor man Marcus Copeland hit a 2, which tied the leg and resulted in the match ending 6-4 in favour of the Cinnamon Stick. I'm not sure if Marcus hit his last stick to gain the tie, or if he missed his last stick to miss out on gaining a leg victory, but either way it was a tense end to the match. The final match in this report also went to the final leg, with away side Middle Barton SSC 'B' winning this final leg to gain a solid 7-3 away win over Stonesfield SSC 'A'. Mark Lacey was on fine form for Middle Barton, hitting a 6 on his way to an excellent 18 dolls.

Special mention this week, and the winner of the 'Top Man' award goes to Steve Ducker from Enstone SSC 'A'. Not only did I have a picture of the card sent over to me just after the match ended, I then had the card copy posted through my letterbox that same night, AND he delivered his completed Competition Form. Blooming marvelous, cheers Steve.

Still missing a couple of cards, and one match I haven't even had a picture which is very poor form! Think I might start naming and shaming next week.....

Cheers all.

REPORT

So, we are off and running. It was a bit fresh, but at least we stayed dry!

It was pleasing to see that all matches were competitive, with every team winning at least one leg. Lets hope this continues.

My report starts this week with the Lower Section match between the George & Dragon and the Cinnamon Stick. There was, as far as I'm aware, a little piece of history made in the 2nd leg. The George hit a total of 6 dolls in this leg, and all of those dolls were scored by one player! Take a bow Dave Gardiner! You might not be surprised to read that the George lost that leg, but with thanks to Dave's excellent total of 22 dolls he helped his team secure 3 points, even though his team only played with five players.

In the Top Sections, new boys Eynsham SSC hosted other new boys Enstone SSC 'B', which looked a great contest. It went to a last leg decider, in which Enstone hit a big 24 dolls to claim the 6-4 victory. The Black Prince 'B' fought back from losing the opening two legs away at the Queens Head to win the next three legs and gain an impressive 6-4 win, and the Masons Arms 'A' also produced a strong performance to pick up a 7-3 away win over Enstone SSC 'A'. Finally, the Black Prince 'A' seemed to be crusing after going 6-0 up at home against Chadlington SSC, but the away team hit back to take 3 points back home with them.

Job done. I can only report on the matches for which I've had the hard copy of the card delivered, so if your name or team isn't mentioned above you know why!
