REPORT

The 2025 season came to a thrilling close at finals night, with a packed out Eynsham social club witnessing another night of great entertainment. It was great to see so many people in attendance. Lets see if I can do it justice in my report...

The evening kicked off with the Supplementary Cup Final, which was between Section Two side the White House A and Section Three league winners the Red Lion. The White House were no strangers to appearing in this fixture, having won the trophy a couple of years ago, so were keen to reclaim the shield. However, it would be a tough test against the Red Lion side, who were making their first appearance at finals night and have been the most improved side in our league this year. It was the White House who started things off, setting 12 dolls in the opening leg which proved to be just enough as the Lion fell just one doll short in their chase. The White House set again in leg two, this time posting an improved total of 14 dolls. The Lion's chase got off to a flyer as lead off man Roland D'Costa hit an impressive 4 dolls, and his teammates followed this up by all adding to the scoreboard as they racked up 17 dolls to level the match. It was then the Lion's turn to set in leg three, in which they were looking like posting only a modest total before penultimate thrower & captain Graham Mills whipped off a 4 to help his side reach a good total of 16 dolls. The White House tried their best to chase this down and did manage to leave anchorman Pat Grealis a shot, but that shot was a 6 to tie! Unfortunately there was no 'anchormans dream', meaning that the Lion moved into a 4-2 lead. Knowing that they couldn't afford to lose any further legs, it was the White House who set in the fourth leg. However, this didn't go to plan as they could only post a total of 11 dolls. The Lion's chase was ticking along nicely until it got a little twitchy at the end! Needing just 2 dolls from their last two players, Graham decided to keep things interesting by failing to score, meaning that anchorman Marcus Copelin was left to do things on his own. However, he did this without fuss, meaning that the Lion moved into an unassailable 6-2 lead and completed an impressive league & cup double. After a few years of struggles, it was great to see the Lion get rewarded for their efforts with some silverware and I hope things work out at the pub to allow to back to defend their trophies next season. And I'm sure that the White House A will be back and be in mix next year.

We then moved onto the Fours Final, which was between sides from the White House B and the Masons Arms A. Both sides played extremely well in the playoff round so it looked like a close match was on the cards. It was the White House who won the toss and decided to set in the first leg, and they got things off with a bang as lead off man Barry Townsend whipped off the evenings first maximum. His teammates continued to add to the score and they ended up posting a good score of 15 dolls. This proved to much for the Masons to chase down, meaning that the White House took an early lead. The Masons then set in the second leg and posted a decent score of 12 dolls, which is always difficult to know if it's a good or bad total. The White House ticked their score along without scoring massive, meaning that anchorman Steve Enock was faced with needing 3 to win. After hitting 2 early dolls it looked like Steve would have to settle for the draw, but he held his nerve and hit his last stick to secure the 3 dolls needed which in turn won the match for the White House B.

Next up was the Triples Final, which again saw the White House B out in action, this time against the triple from Enstone SSC B. Both sides had battled with the elements in the previous round back in early September so certainly deserved their places in the final and it looked like it would be a closely fought fixture. It was certainly that! The White House set in the opening leg and posted a good total of 9 dolls. This looked like a winning score as Enstone's anchorman Steve Arthurs was left needing a six to win. Although he didn't quite manage this, he did show great skill to hit the 5 dolls required to tie the leg. It was then Enstone's turn to set, and they managed to post an impressive score of 10 dolls, which included another 5 from Steve Arthurs. This score proved too much for the White House, meaning that Enstone moved into a 3-1 lead and only needed to avoid defeat in the final leg to claim the trophy. They won the toss in this deciding leg and obviously chose to set. It got off to a flying start with lead off man Rob Bradford hitting 5 dolls, but his teammates couldn't back him up as they could only hit 1 doll each to move the set onto just 7 dolls (yes, that means Steve Arthurs is actually human!). Knowing that only a win would keep the match going it was left to Steve Enock to hit the winning doll as he scored with his last stick, repeating the feat he achieved in the fours final. This leveled the match at 3-3, sending it to a three sticker. Enstone again had the honour, but the failed to take advantage of this and could only post a score of 3 dolls. This turned out to be not enough as the White House hit the 4 dolls required to claim the match victory.

We then moved onto the Sixers Cup, which is our signature match and is fast becoming everyone's favourite match played at finals night. Yet again there were some seriously big hitters on show and the match didn't fail to live up to the high expectations which we had. It must be said that the crowd do love this event, with everyone's attention focused on the battle to see who comes out on top. It was amazing to see just how close this years event was. After four legs, there was only 4 dolls separating all six players. After hitting a maximum with his fourth throw, Charlbury's Steve England held the narrow lead with 18 dolls. So, into the fifth and final leg we went. Neil Lyon opened things up and posted the clubhouse score with a 5, which put his overall total up to 20 dolls. Up next was Steve Arthurs, who also hit a 5 to match Neil's total of 20 dolls. The first faller was Roger Goodall, who missed his first two sticks which prevented him from getting to the 20 total. Next up was Phil Austin, who hit another 5 to post a new clubhouse score of 21 dolls. Game on! Next to go was Steve England. Knowing that it was in his hands, Steve held his nerve to hit the 4 dolls required to move onto 22 dolls and claim the match win and relegate Phil into the runners-up position. It was another stunning final, which never fails to disappoint. Congratulations to all six players in making it through to the final and then putting on an excellent show for the crowd. The biggest problem with this event is that the quality is so dam good that sticking up for it is exhausting work!!

The next matches were the Singles Semi-Finals. First up saw the Mason's Ashley Keenan take on Enstone's Steve Ducker for a place in the final. It was Ashley who managed to claim his spot in the final after winning the deciding leg. The first leg ended in a draw after Steve managed to match Ashely's set of 3 dolls, meaning that the match would need all three legs. However, it was Ashley who won both of these legs to advance through. The second semi final was a battle of the big guns, with Steve Arthurs facing off against Steve England. It had a feeling of a match which would need a third leg, and that's exactly what happened. Interestingly, in each of the three legs played the player who set was the player who lost the leg. The deciding leg went the way of Steve Arthurs after he was successful in chasing down Steve England's set of 3 dolls, which moved him a step closer to defending his crown. Well done to Steve Ducker & Steve England for making it through to the semi finals, which is still a fantastic achievement.

Next up was the Knockout Cup Final, which was between the White House B and the Oxford Yeoman A. This had the makings of a very close match, with both sides knowing that they would have to perform well if they were to have any chance of victory. It was impossible to say which team was the favourite, all we could say for sure is that it would be very interesting! The Yeoman put up the first surprise of the match by putting the White House into bat in the opening leg. The White House took full advantage of this by posting a big score of 20 dolls, which proved to be a winning total to move 2-0 ahead. The White House set again in the second leg, but this time they could only post a score of 17 dolls. This time the Yeoman were successful in their chase as they cruised past this score with a player to spare to level up the match. The monmentum was clearly with the Yeoman lads, and they continued this by setting an impressive 20 dolls in the third leg. This proved more than enough as the White House couldn't get near to chasing this down, putting the Yeoman 4-2 ahead and within touching distance of the cup. The White House set in the fourth leg and managed to produce an excellent set under pressure of 22 dolls, which the Yeoman failed to get close to chasing down. So, with the scores level at 4-4, a last leg shootout was required. They won the toss, decided to set and with the full support of the watching crowd they posted a score of 17 dolls. The leg was in the balance, with the White House just about stating in touch. It went down to the final stick in the final throw, with anchorman Mick Phipps needing a 4 to tie the leg. He gave it his best shot, but missed his last stick to give the Yeoman the memorable victory and trigger huge cheering & applause. It was a great final and a well deserved victory for the Yeoman side, who capped off an impressive season by claiming their first Knockout Cup win. They handled the occassion extremely well, with every player playing an important role in helping their team score above their average in four out of the five legs. I can confirm that the the trophy was filled up at the bar as the team continued their celebrations and the fines pot is being put to good use as they head out for their end of season tour to Lithuania!! Good work chaps, send in some pictures!

Once the cup celebrations had calmed down (although they were certainly still going on at the bar!) it was time for the evenings penultimate match, which was the Pairs Final. This was between Phil Austin & Mick Phipps of the White House B and Alan Stevens & Steve England from Charlbury SSC in what was yet another final that was to close to call. It was the White House pair who struck first by taking the opening leg to move 2-0 ahead. They then had a great chance to win the match in the second leg when chasing Charlbury's set of 6 dolls, but not only did they not win the leg but they also failed to tie it, meaning that Charlbury leveled up the match score at 2-2. After the crucial coin toss, it was the Charlbury pair who set in the deciding leg and they posted an excellent score of 8 dolls. Despite their best efforts, the White House pair were unable to chase that score down meaning that Alan & Steve claimed the title for Charlbury.

The last match of the evening was the Singles Final between Ashley Keenan & Steve Arthurs, who had both won their semi finals earlier in the evening. Ashley was looking to back up his singles win in the winter league, whilst Steve was looking to defend this trophy after winning it last season. There was nothing between the two throwers in legs one & two, with both legs being tied after scores of 3 dolls each. So, a last leg decider was required. It was Steve who won the toss and decided to set, where he produced one last moment of excellence by setting 5 dolls. Ashley was unable to match that, meaning Steve got his hands on the trophy again.

Wow, what a night! There was excellent throwing throughout the evening and all players should be proud of their efforts on the evening. What the scores above don't tell you is although there were three maximums hit on the night, it could have been so many more as multiple times a throwers last stick was missed. The quality of this league is at times unbelievable! I truely hope that everyone enjoyed the evening as much as I did.

Thanks all

Premier & Section One:

Premier champions Enstone SSC B ended their season in style after winning their match 6-4 away at Charlbury SSC. It looked like it was a very entertaining match, with both sides playing well. This was proved by the card being blob free, which was only fifth match this season to achieve this. The match swung one way and then other and with the score tied at 4-4, a good old last leg decider was needed. It was Enstone who set in this final leg and they posted an impressive 23 dolls. Charlbury had a good go at chasing this down but ultimately came up short, meaning that Enstone took the match and finished the season with just two defeats against their name. And then there's Steve Arthurs. What more can be said about this machine! I need to delve back into the record books, but I'm pretty sure that his individual total of 372 dolls is a new Wychwood record. He 'only' managed 20 dolls this week and 'only' hit the one maximum! It's been an exceptional season of throwing by Steve, and the worrying thing is that he tends to get better once the competitions get started! I would also like to give some special praise to Charlbury's Steve England. He has also had a fantastic season, coming runner up in the top doll table with a mighty 342 dolls. My final shout out from this fixture is for the performance of Enstone's Trevor Dyer after he hit a season's best score of 18 dolls. The White House B managed to end their league campaign with a good 8-2 victory over the Oxford Yeoman A. It was a close match, with both captains determined to put the other side in when winning the toss (which did make the White House captain Phil 'We'll go' Austin come over in a cold sweat!). I didn't actually know that the Y in Yeoman stands for "You can go!" The match was played in good spirits, with the highlights being the performances of some of the players from both sides. For the White House, Barry Townsend managed to get his name onto the Big Hitters list for the second time after hitting an impressive 21 dolls whist Phil Austin managed to hit his first maximum of the season to claim a late entry into the Sixers Playoff. As for the Yeoman, the focus was on who was going to end up wearing the Mr Blobby suit. The pressure was on Ade Marks, who was 'forced' into playing in the opening four legs with the target obviously being to just hit something! Ade was up to the challenge, hitting dolls in every leg to keep his card blob free. He was given a rest in the final leg so that he could prepare the Blobby suit ready to hand over to Sam Walker, who I'm sure will really enjoying putting it on! There was an entertaining match between hosts the Masons Arms A and visitors the New Inn which ended in a rare 5-5 draw. After the Mason's easily won the first leg, the New Inn were in big trouble in the second as their set was on only 6 dolls after four players had thrown. However their final throwers, being Neil Lyon & Wayne Townsend, both hit maximums to drag their total up to 18 dolls, which turned out to be a winning score. They then went onto to win the third leg after the Mason's failed to chase down the New Inn's modest set of 15 dolls. A drawn fourth leg had the score poised at 5-3 to the New Inn. Setting again, they posted a total of 18 dolls, which included the third maximum in the match, this time from Roger Goodall. However, the Mason's made light work of this total as they went past it with one player spare to take the leg and level up the match. Neil Lyon ended his season in the same way which he started it by hitting 22 dolls, although I'm sure he is a little frustrated with some of the scores that he's hit inbetween. I'm sure he will be back to top form next year. The Oxford Yeoman B finished off their season by making it back to back victories after defeating the White Hart at home 9-1. The Yeoman took the opening leg before a tied second leg had things evenly poised with three legs to go. However, the home side clicked into top gear to win those remaining legs and secure the big win. The Yeoman's Dave Trim ended the season on a high note with a season's best score of 17 dolls. As for the White Hart, Morgan Sykes capped on an excellent season with another good score, this time vcoming in with 15 dolls. Finally, Section One winners Yarnton BL ended their season in style after winning their home match against Eynsham SSC A. They won the first leg after successfully chasing down Eynsham's set of 18 dolls, thanks in main to anchorman Mark Poulter hitting the four required to take the leg (plus an extra one to make five, just to make sure). Yarnton comfortably took the second leg, with the third leg ending in a tie to put the home side into a commanding lead. Eynsham hit back to take the fourth to send the match into a last leg decider. However, they could only post a lowly set of 11 dolls in this final leg, which Yarnton went past with ease. It capped off an impressive season for Yarnton and I'm certain that they will be back next year and will be just as strong. As for Eynsham, well, it's probably been a season to forget. But with the quality they have available, I'm sure they will bounce back next year.

And that rounds things up in the top sections. It's been a season of high quality, with all sides playing to a high standard and capable of taking points of each other. I reckon there will be more of the same next year. Congratulations again to Premier winners Enstone SSC B and Section One winners Yarnton BL - make sure you're all their on finals night to pick up your winning trophies!

Section Two & Section Three:

Seeing as section three was the only section still up for grabs it's only fitting that the report should begin with the events in the lower sections. I'm pretty sure I had previously predicted that section three could go down to the wire, and it certainly did as it went down to the final leg of the season. Going into this final round of fixtures, Stonesfield SSC A held a narrow two point lead at the top of the table. Their final match was a tricky looking away fixture against section two champions Enstone SSC A. Stoney started the match by winning the opening two legs to move 4-0 ahead. At this point they perhaps allowed their thinking to shift onto lifting the trophy as their performance slightly dropped which allowed Enstone to hit back by winning the next two legs to level up the match at 4-4. Deep down, they knew that they had to win the last leg decider, which they narrowly did thanks to anchorman Aaron Atkin hitting the 3 dolls required to take the leg and secured a 6-4 Stoney win. This put them on a final total of 123 points. This meant that the Red Lion would need a minimum of an 8-2 victory to force a playoff. They had the advantage of playing at home where they faced the dangerous Masons Arms B. Although it hadn't been the Mason's greatest season, they are still a side made up a good throwers and always have the potential of beating anyone, so it certainly wasn't a given that the Lion would win at all, let alone win by a big margain. However, they held their nerve and kept on fighting to keep winning a leg at a time. They were leading 8-0 with just the last leg to go, which turned out to be a massive leg and would in the end decide the outcome of the section. Faced with a set of 12 dolls, they managed to match this score with just their anchorman to go. Step forwards Marcus Copelin, who capped off a magnificant season to hit the winning doll in this leg which secured the 10-0 match win. This put the Lion onto 125 points, meaning that they claimed the section three title by just two points. Congratulations has to go to both the Lion and the Stoney sides for their efforts this season. It's been a thrilling contest to watch them go at it every week and they should both be proud of their efforts. Keep up the enthusiasm chaps and come out fighting in the cup matches next week! In the other fixtures, the Three Horseshoes ended a testing season well by picking up their third win of the season after winning their home match against the White House A 6-4. They started the match well by winning the opening two legs to go 4-0 up, before they suffered a blip in the third leg where they could only muster 2 dolls between them (4 if you include the handicap). However, they bounced back in the fourth leg to go 6-2 ahead. The White House managed to find some form in the final leg but it was too little too late as the home side claimed the match win. The other two matches in the lower sections both finished up 8-2. Eynsham SSC B secured their big win at home against Middle Barton SSC. The Barton side actually took the opening leg before Eynsham hit back to win the four remaining legs to end their season on a high. Eynsham's Lee Parsons had a particularly enjoyable end to his season as he hit a season's best score of 16 dolls, which was the top section two score of the week. The other match which ended 8-2 saw Chadlington SSC claim an impressive win away against Stonesfield SSC B. The match was closer than the scoreline suggests, with two of the five legs ending in draws, however it was the away side who won the other legs to run away with the victory. Chadlington's Tommy Burden was the match top scorer after hitting a season's best score of 14 dolls.

And that is that! It's been a really good season in the lower sections, with a clear improvement in scoring. All the scheduled fixtures have been played and there has only been a couple of times when I've had to chase for cards. Well done to all the teams & players involved, and a final congratulations to Section Two winners Enstone SSC A and Section Three winners the Red Lion.

Premier & Section One:

Finally, the sun decided to join us for League Round 7 and the good weather helped to throw up some very interesting results. The top two sides in the Premier faced off against each other as leaders Enstone SSC B hosted second placed the White House B. It was the home side who found their form straight away as they eased into a 6-0 lead. This was in part due to some good throwing by the home side and some poor efforts by the away sides bottom half. A 10-0 was certainly on the cards, and with Enstone posting 22 dolls in the fourth leg it looked like they would extend their lead in the match even further. However, the White House side finally managed to click all at the same time in their chase, with anchorman Mick Phipps hitting a four which tied the leg and prevented the clean sweep. The White House continued their recovery by taking the final leg, meaning that the match ended 7-3 which I think both teams would be happy with. The whole Enstone side played well throughout the match as they managed to keep thier card blob free. One player who didn't need to worry about a blob was Steve Arthurs, who produced a masterful display in racking up 25 dolls (5,6,4,5,5). This was the highest individual score of the season so far and it was a pleasure to watch him at work. Another big result of the week saw the New Inn pick up their first victory of the season as after they won their home match against Charlbury SSC 6-4. It was a very tight match, with the first & third legs ending in draws and then the New Inn managing to win leg four after a low set of 14 dolls, so the match result could have been very different. Charlbury's Steve England was the match top scorer with 21 dolls, with honourable mentions to the New Inn's Neil Lyon (19 dolls) & Anthony Algar (18 dolls). I'm sure the New Inn side will be relieved to finally get the monkey of their back to claim this first win of the season, and they managed to do it without one of their star players - I wonder if he will get back in the team this week! There was a very entertaining 5-5 draw in the match between Eynsham SSC A and the Oxford Yeoman A. It was great to see that both sides named eight players, and everyone played a good part in the match. It was also very pleasing to hear how much all players enjoyed taking part in the match and that it was played in the correct spirit, so well done to both sides for this. As for the actual match, it swung one way and then the other. The Yeoman took the opening leg, before Eynsham hit back to take legs two & three. Eynsham were then favourites to take leg four, but the Yeoman's anchorman Jamie Flood hit the four dolls required to tie the leg, meaning that the match score was poised at 5-3 to Eynsham going into the final leg. A set of 15 dolls by Eynsham kept them in the hunt, but the Yeoman finished of their excellent throwing by going past this score to tie the match up a 5-5. The match top scorer, coming in with a personal best score was the Yeoman's Jamie Flood, who hit 19 dolls on the night. From what I was told, players from both sides were willing him to hit the one further doll required to make it onto the Big Hitters table, but it wasn't meant to be. It was still a fantastic effort, so well done Jamie. Yarnton BL moved clear at the top of Section One following an impressive 8-2 away win over the White Hart. The first two legs were shared before Yarnton took control of the match to win the remaining three legs and claim the big win. You never quite know what your going to get from this White Hart side. They are always dangerous, but this just wasn't the week for them. As for Yarnton, they are quitely going about their business and are putting themselves into a good position to maintain a title challenge. Final, the Masons Arms A would have been delighted as they managed to pick up a 6-4 away win over the Oxford Yeoman B, which is a venue that they never get many points from. But it could have been so very different! With the Masons 4-2 behind in the match and setting in the fourth leg, they only had 12 dolls on the board with one player remaining. However, anchorman Spencer Buckingham stepped up and whipped off a maximum to get their total up to 18 dolls, which proved to be a winning score. So, a last leg was required. The Masons managed to post a great set of 19 dolls in this final leg (which even included a blob), and this total proved to be a winning score as the Yeoman failed in their attempts to chase it down.

It certainly seemed to be a good week in the top sections, and with more good weather ahead lets see if we can get a few more names on the Six Hitter table.

Section Two & Section Three:

A couple of cards that have missed the cut in making this weeks report, which makes my job a bit easier. The standout team performance came in the Stonesfield derby, where the A side 'hosted' the B side. It was the A side who came away with the bragging rights after a fantastic team effort saw them pick up n 8-2 victory.  This included scores of 20 & 17 in the opening two legs, which really is impressive considering that we are talking about a side in Section Three. They are the form side out of all the sections at the moment, having put just under 3.5 dolls per leg on their average from last year. It's great to see the improvement in some of their players, and I will take this opportunity to single out one of their team. This player is Ben Wagerfield. Last season, Ben took part in 16 matches and scored double figures on just one occasion. This season, Ben has already scored double figures in three different matches, including the 13 dolls which he hit his week. Well done indeed Ben. It just shows as a reminder to us all that the aim of the game is to hit the doll! The more times you do that, the more chance you have of winning!! Michael Franklin is also worthy of a mention and has also had an excellent start to the season. This week he hit a season's best score of 15 dolls to be the match top scorer. Eynsham SSC B managed to pick up an important 8-2 away win over rivals the White House A. This was another match which was closer than the scoreline suggests, with Eynsham scoring just 3 more dolls than the White House over the five legs played. Two of the legs were tied, with each of the other three legs being won by just a single doll. Although both sides would like to have a few more points in the bag, there is no reason why either of them can't go on a run of victories to move up the table. Finally, Enstone SSC A managed to win a last leg decider away at the Three Horseshoes to ruin the home sides chances of picking up their first positive match outcome. The Shoes were actually 4-2 ahead with two legs to play, but the Enstone boys managed to improve their scores to win those final two legs to claim the match 6-4. Jason Eley continued his good form for Enstone with 15 dolls on the night.

Thats all chaps. Remember, if you want to make the report then the cards need to be with me asap. Captains, if you are away and unavailable to play for whatever reason make sure you inform your vice captain that they need to send the card! Cheers all

Premier & Section One:

In what was perhaps the biggest shock of the season so far, The Oxford Yeoman A claimed a 9-1 home victory over Premier leaders Enstone SSC B. It was a mighty performance by the Yeoman side as they racked up 87 dolls on the night, which was two more than the away side could manage. The Yeoman's previous best nightly score was 69 dolls, which shows impressive they were this week. Doug Mingham top scored with 19 dolls, with Ethan Simlett & Kieran McCall both chipping in with 15 dolls each. Considering Kieran had only scored 14 dolls from the 10 legs he had played in so far this season, I think a drugs test is now in order! Seriously, great throwing team. As for Enstone, I doubt there is any reason to panic as they actually played quite well, so look out for them bouncing back next week. Steve Arthurs racked up another 20+ score, this week hitting 21 dolls, whilst Rob Bradford notched another maximum. Charlbury SSC hosted Eynsham SSC A in what was an entertaining fixture. Eynsham opened things up by taking the first leg with ease, although their set of 19 dolls was certainly helped by anchorman Mark Revill hitting a maximum. Charlbury then hit back to win the next three legs to move into an unassailbale 6-2 lead, which included a big score of 24 dolls in the fourth leg. Eynsham did manage to win the final leg to limit the damage to a 6-4 defeat, but it wasn't the result they would have been looking for if they want to close the gap at the top of the table. Charlbury's George Williams was the match top scorer with 19 dolls.

Apart from the week's league action, there was also a Knockout Cup preliminary match played in which Charlbury SSC hosted the Oxford Yeoman B. It was a high quality match which went the distance, with the Yeoman winning the last leg decider. Charlbury were 4-2 ahead after three legs, but the Yeoman side showed great resiliance in successfully chasing down and passing Charlbury's sets of 18 & 20 in the final two legs to win the match and advance into the next round. Even though he ended up on the losing side, Charlbury's Steve England had a great match after hitting 22 dolls, which included two maximums.

Section Two & Section Three:

Enstone SSC A  maintained their spot at the top of Section Two despite being held to a 5-5 draw at home against the White House A. It looked like a big home win was on the cards after Enstone moved into a 5-1 lead after three legs, but the away side kept plugging away to win the final two legs to level the match up. This was only possible due to a bit of magic by the White House's anchorman Pat Grealis, who hit the four required to win the fourth leg to keep his side in the match. The top three sides in Section Three all picked up big wins in what is shaping up to be a very interesting battle. Stonesfield SSC A hold the advantage at the moment and they continued their mighty recent form to pick a very impressive 9-1 away win over Eynsham SSC B. It was another good night of throwing by the Stoney side, with Aaron Atkins top scoring with 15 dolls. The Red Lion hold second spot in the table, and they kept within striking distance at the top after winning 8-2 in their home match against the Three Horseshoes. Although they didn't hit massive numbers in the match, the Lion proved strong enough to claim the big win. Stonesfield SSC B picked up a 7-3 home win over Middle Barton SSC, but will be disappointed that the margain of victory wasn't even bigger. They came flying out the blocks and quickly moved into a 6-0 lead, which included hitting 18 dolls in the first leg. However, their performance dipped, which allowed the Barton side to get some points on the board as they won the fourth leg and tied the final leg.

REPORT

As predicted, it was a night of thrills and spills for the this years Singles Competition. There were some big players who exited the competition, which always happens as there are always some shocks. I would say that out of the four venues, only one 'favourite' made it through to finals night. I will refrain from doing full reports on all the matches, but from looking at the scoresheets I'll pick out a couple of highlights.

Venue One: George & Dragon.

First Round:

Five out of the eight matches went to a third leg in a very tight round of fixtures. The second match saw Darren Grant hit the evenings only maximum on his way to defeating home favourite Dave Gardiner, whilst fellow White House 'B' teammate Terry Stuart hit a two to win his 3 stick playoff against Aldofo Kerpache. It was a family affair as Graham Reading played Marcus Reading, with Marcus winning the last leg decider. Marcus hit a five in the second leg, but it really should have been the evenings second maximum after a big nick of the doll with his fifth stick, but the dam doll refused to fall off! Darren Turner & Keith Powell had the rounds closest match, which needed two rounds of 1 stick madness before Keith made it through.

Quarter Finals:

Not much to say about this round as the winners advanced through without trouble.

Semi Finals & Final:

It was an all White House 'B' affair in the first Semi, as Darren Grant played Terry Stuart. Both players had looked in good form so far, but it was Terry that just edged it to move to the final, although Darren suffered the same fate as Marcus from earlier in evening with by nicking the doll without it coming off! The second Semi was the venue's standout match, as old friends/rivals Dick Walsh & Keith Powell faced each other. A set of 4 was tied, then a set of 5 was also tied, meaning a last leg decider was required. Dick set 4 in this leg, which proved just enough to win. The Final, between Terry & Dick, was also a very tight match, and it needed a 3 sticker to decide the winner. Former Singles Winner Dick showed his Singles competition pedigree but hitting 3 out of 3 in this decider, which Terry couldn't get.

Venue Two: Three Horseshoes

First Round:

Just down the road in Long Hanborough, the Three Horseshoes was the second venue. There was an early shock in the second match, as Phil Austin, fresh from reaching the Oxford Leagues Singles Semi Finals the night before, went out in two straight legs to an excellent display by Neil Pratley. Lee Gardiner claimed bragging rights after defeating his George & Dragon teammate Nigel King, whilst there was a high quality match between Mark Revill & Lee Hazell, which Rev took on the last leg. The highlight of the round was almost a massive shock, as Barry Townsend (Premier - White House 'B') faced off against Mark Finch (Section Two - Red Lion). Going into the final leg, Barry was set 4 dolls in a leg which he needed to win. He hit a 5, which took the match to 3 sticks. Mark hit a 2, which Barry managed to match, sending it to a 1 stick shoot out. Unfortunately for him, Mark missed and Barry hit to advance to the next round.
Quarter Finals:
Neil Pratley continued his good form in his quarter final match against home thrower Alex Chamberlain by winning through after a 3 sticker to take his place in the Semi Finals. Steve Rogers also won his match on 3 sticks, defeating Spencer Buckingham in a close match.

Semi Finals & Final:
All these three matches were surprisingly straight forward 2-0 wins. The best players on the night faced each other in the Final, which was between Neil Pratley & Barry Townsend. It was Barry that held his nerve and advanced through to Finals Night.

Venue Three: Eynsham SSC

First Round:
This was a very strong looking venue, and there was certainly a shock or two! The first match of the night went to a 3 sticker between Roger Goodall & Alan Major, which Roger won after hitting 3 out of 3. Steve McAteer & Steve England faced each other in a battle of the big guns, with the latter hitting a couple of 4's to claim the win. Lucy Davies nearly claimed the scalp of Lee Thompson, with Lee needing a 3 sticker to win through. The big shock of the round saw Wayne Townsend defeat Charlie Buckingham in the last leg decider. Charlie has regularly made it through to Finals Night, and won the event in 2017, so it was a surprise to see him exit in the first round.

Quarter Finals:

Wow, what a set of close matches! Three out of the four Quarter Finals went to 3 sticks in a very tight set of matches, with the othe match going to a last leg decider! The opening match saw Roger Goodall hit 3 out of 3 for the second time of the evening as he squeezed through against Alan Stevens. The second match saw Steve Ducker hit a 5 to tie the last leg in his match against Ian Widdows, which was enough to take him through. Lee Thompson then defeated Steve England in their 3 sticker, before finally Wayne Townsend squeezed through after a 1 stick shoot out in his match with Mark Lacey. It looked like it was compelling veiwing, well done to all those who were involved.
Semi Finals & Final:
There was a huge shock in the first Semi Final as Steve Ducker defeated Roger Goodall to take his place in the venue final. Roger's form has been exceptional in recent weeks, but it was Steve who produced some magic to win in two straight legs. In the other Semi, Lee Thompson just edged it over Wayne Townsend, needing a 3 stick playoff to win through. Lee managed to continue his good form in the Final, defeating Steve 2-0 to get through to Finals and have a crack at winning the trophy he last won in 2007.

Venue Four: White Hart

First Round:

There was a disappointing four no shows at this (Grrrrrr), but it didn't stop the action being good. The First round was relatively straight forward, with 'favourites' on paper all winning through their matches to take their places in the Quarter Finals.

Quarter Finals:

The action hotted up in this round, and there was very nearly a huge upset. Rob Bradford squeezed through in his match against Raymondo Barson, but only after a 1 stick shoot out! With the match tied after three legs, Ray set a 2 in the 3 sticker, which Rob managed to tie. Ray then missed his 1 stick attempt, with Rob hitting to sneak through. Mick Phipps needed a 3 stick playoff to win his match against Kevin Johnson, whilst Kevin's teammates Ray Grant & Dean Harris faired better by winning their matches.
Semi Finals & Final:
The two Semi Finals were straight forward 2-0 wins for both Ray Grant & Rob Bradford, beating Mick Phipps & Henry Johnson respectivlely, which set things up for the final. The crowd must have enjoyed the final as it went down to 3 sticks, with Rob again just doing enough to squeeze through. Could this be the year which Rob adds the Wychwood Singles trophy to his portfolio? I guess we will have to wait and see later in the year.

Thanks to everyone who took part. That was the largest number of entries I've ever seen (75 of you!) so well done all. As for the Final four players, that's as strong as a line up as I can remember. I can't wait to see who comes out on top.

It would be wrong of me not to mention that there was also a league match which took place, which resulted in a very important 10-0 away win for Eynsham SSC 'B' over the Cinnamon Stick. It's going to be a fight to the finish between Eynsham & the White House for the Section Two title, so big wins like this could turn out to be crucial. Lee Parsons & John Ayres were on fine form for Eynsham, both hitting 14 dolls to help claim the victory.

All done - I'm exhausted now! Back to league action this week. There are a couple of teams that send the cards in a little late, so just a friendly nudge to get them in asap please. Cheers.

WEBSITE UPDATES

There are still a few cards arriving a little later than I'd like - just to remind you, the only thing that gets updated after I receive a photo is the result. All the other stats (Sixers, Weekly Top Doll Scorers, Tables, Team Stats, Section Doll Scorers and of course the Weekly Report) DON'T get touched until I'm in possession of the hard copy. Time to nag your captain, or help them out by taking responsibility for delivering the card.

Thanks for your patience and understanding with everything, and hopefully the remainder of the season will be a lot smoother than the beginning!

Cheers

NO CARDS ARE TO BE DELIVERED TO THE BLACK PRINCE.

ALL CARDS MUST BE DELIVERED TO MY HOME ADDRESS. THANKS

AND HERE WE GO!:

Drumroll please... at long last, the 2023 season gets up and running this evening! Wychwood towers has been a hive of activity over the last few months, but the time for talking is over, now it's up to everyone to smash that doll! Get there early, get the beer's in and enjoy your evenings! I'm stuck working a night shift tonight, but I'll have my phone with me so I look forward to watching it ping with the pictures of the results cards.

Just to remind you:

- Send me a picture of the card after the match

- Get the hard copy to me asap

- Take your sticks, your wallets and a big smile with you

- Enjoy it!!!

Good luck everyone. May the 4th be with you

PREMIER SECTION - HANDICAP UPDATE:

There has been a change to Charlbury SSC's handicap. They are now +3 instead of +4. The updated league & cup fixture list can be downloaded above.

ALL PLAYERS - A MUST READ!

Can I invite all visitors to this website to take a moment to read the details outlined on the 'AUNT SALLY ETIQUETTE' page please.

With the greatest of respect, all participants of our league are reminded of our expectations regarding acceptable behaviour.

WELCOME NOTE

Firstly, myself and the rest of the committee would like to thank all venues, teams & players for signing up to play in our league. We have had 23 teams sign up, which is the largest number of entries for many years. We have lots of returning teams and some new teams, so the reputation of our league is continuing to grow. We realise how much of a commitment Aunt Sally can sometimes be, and without your support our league would be no more, so thank you all.

As always, we feel we have come up with a competitive fixture schedule and handicap grading, which is based on team scoring stats and obviously by the players who have been signed up on your team sheets. You are still able to sign on more players, but be warned, this may affect your handicap! The handicap system has been based on the averages each player achieved when last played, but with the emphasis still being on players hitting the doll, which is surely the way it should be. All our competitions are again FREE to enter this year, so please get your names down on the Competition Entry Forms and send them in. You will notice that, due to the increased number of team entries, we have changed the league format to three larger sections. This has given us more flexibility with the schedule, which can be seen in the fixture list.

As for the scorecards and results, the scorecard design is the same as before, so can all captains please make sure these are filled in correctly and neatly. These scorecards need to be sent in ASAP, so that I can keep the website up to date. It is my intention to get the results published in The Oxford Mail, but to do this I have to email the results over on a Sunday. The quickest way to do this is to take a picture of the completed card and text it over to me after the match. Please see the SCORECARD GUIDANCE page for further advice on this. A picture of the card should be sent after the match, and then the hard copy of the card to be sent in. The cards can be delivered via post or by hand to my home address, which is printed on the card, or hand it in to the staff at the Black Prince. Please note rules 10, 11 & 17, which clearly state that if result cards are not sent in then an 8-2 score will be awarded to the non-offending team!

As for the website, I have spent more hours than I care to count on upgrading it, so it now has more information available for you to study over a pint or four. I will keep it as up to date as possible, but to allow me to do this I must have the hard copies of the scorecards, so get them to me ASAP please. All information and updates will be published on the home page, so please make sure you keep an eye out.

Good luck everyone. If anyone has any questions then please feel free to contact me directly and I will be happy to assist you in any way that I can.

Darren

4TH MAY - SEASON START DATE

The website is always being worked on, and the various pages will be displayed in due course. Feel free to let me know if I've made any spelling mistakes! More importantly, pay close attention to the players who you have signed on and let me know if you want to add to your team list - I wouldn't want anyone to fall foul of playing unregistered players once the season begins.........

NEW SIGNINGS ETC...

With the new season on the horizon, I'll just put out a polite reminder regarding new signings. Let it be known, we are very flexible regarding this (unlike some other leagues!), but there is still a process that must be adhered to! If you wish to register any new players, I MUST be notified at least 24 hours before they can play. A simple text or call will do. If I receive result cards that have non-registered players on it then there is a strong chance that the match will be awarded 10-0 to the non-offending team. Each teams list of registered players can be found in '2023 Individual Scores' tabs at the top of the homepage. There are no excuses, and the committee have decided to be strict with this rule this season.

The other thing to mention is my favourite subject...........RESULT CARDS!!

Play the match, sign the card, take a picture on your phone and send it straight to me! Simple!

Despite everyone knowing this, I still had to spend far too much time chasing late cards last season. To get the results into the Oxford Mail, I have to email them on Sunday evening, so I need the cards in by then. I make no apologies, or do I enjoy, moaning about late cards and it is up to the team captains to make sure they are sent in promptly. Help me out please teams!

Finally, the committee and I would like to thank you all for signing up to play in our league yet again and we would like to wish each and every one of you good luck. We think we have a great league, and we hope you agree and enjoy it. Let's see what the 2019 season has in store for us...
